Does anyone know of this vanish? I was in a discussion about the French Drop and was told they use this instead of the French Drop. I'm familiar with the Goshman Pinch but not the Goshamn Toss/Pass.
Thanks. Rachel.

It's described in his book. Essentially it is his handling of a classic method of vanishing a coin. In Goshman's hands you would "see" the coin as he tossed it from one hand into the other. In one method he would thumbpalm and in another method he used the classic palm.

There's not a lot in print about this sort of vanish. It's described in "Magic by Gosh", but if you never saw it in action, you really should find the videotape Goshman did. He teaches the vanish on the tape, and you "see" a sponge ball fly from one hand to the other even though you know he didn't even have one in his hands.
Al Schneider has studied this illusion quite a bit, and his findings are in print, I believe. You can see the illusion in action in video clips on his site. It's my favorite form of retention vanish, and the way it works is different from the more typical T.J. Crawford style retention. I discuss the difference in the mechanics and psychology in The Pocketbook, available from Lulu.com. Also there's an easy handling of this style of retention on Palms of Steel 4: Cashablanca. It's a good place to get started on this, and it will give you the confidence to try the Goshman vanish.

I was blessed to be able to see and be inspired by Goshman.
His toss is still used by this nearly normal guy..Though I must admit I forgot the name of it till reading this thread. Attitude, body posture and mime...can help ...at least IMHO. Harris

I was always impressed by the Goshman Toss. I remember watching an old VHS of him using this move repeatedly and how effective it was. You wouldn't ordinarily think that such a move would be so convincing, as he was doing it from hand to hand at about 1 1/2 feet at times. You do seem to see the motion of the object tossed.
I also read and came to better understand a great deal about this sort of thing, "Movement of a mental image" from Al Schneider's work, even discussed it somewhat with Al quite a while back. Think he spoke somewhat about it in connection with his "Theory(?) of Reality." It's an intresting concept, like graduate study work and practice in the deeper understanding of this stuff. I remember Al mentioning one of the greatest examples of these methods he had seen in the work of Mickey Silver and his unique mastery of the Retention of Vision and so effectively Moving a Mental Image. Very interesting stuff indeed. The deeper understanding of it and the actual doing of it can be two very different things. I doubt if Al Goshman understood it as indepthly as Schneider scientifically puts it, defines it. But along the lines of what the very astute Curtis Kam says here, it does work and without half the know-how of why, I can do it and use it quite often. It is just wonderful to see spec's eyes go from hand to hand as if you've actually tossed something into it. You can actually do it with nothing in your hand at all as he sorta mentions and the spec will swear they saw you toss something from hand to hand. Uncanny.

Ah the "perfect" vanish of a coin...no sle.., no pal..., no top...,
no nothing... as someone once wrote..the beginers mind....(a zen thing...not in reference to the above posters) on a lighter side kind of reminds me of when a centipide or millipede was asked how he walks with so many legs... during the explanation...the insect fell over.... with tongue somewhere near my cheek...and salt shaker nod to Mr. Goshman in the sky... enjoy the play, both intellectual and otherwise... thanks to all for your input...you have helped me grow... nah he's still 5'5"...said Nigel.... though he has added a few pounds... I too was inspired by Goshmans 's toss . I developed the crimp toss based on Goshman's work.
With the crimp toss, the coin is held at finger tips rather than the coin being placed in the palm position. With the right lighting there is a very nice burn. vinny |
