I really enjoyed the museum last year while attending the fun house convention. I spent most of my time at the dime museum instead of the convention, and talked with Mr. Taylor as well. I had bought two mummy heads from him for my oddity museum last year. In closing he has one hell of a museum and I recommend seeing. He's got weird and freaky stuff!

I would LOVE to see this place! I first found out about it through a great little essay written by Teller and posted on Penn & Teller's website. If you're interested I looked up the url for you. It's Here!

Went to the ADM last year while attending the Phoenix Gathering. Spent a good deal of one afternoon there. If you are looking for something unusual this is the place for you. The collection includes animal oddities, human oddities and many other strange things. They have an Elephant Man display and a special section devoted to Melvin Burkhart. Make sure to look for the Harley Newman Wing. Altogether an enjoyable experience.

So I take it that the American Dime Museum is a tribute to oddities? What kind other than the ones listed above? And why do they call it the American DIME Museum if it has no dimes in it?

So it's more of a museum dedicated to sideshows. Very cool and bizarre things in there.

That's right. I thought it would be easier to take a visit than to explain.
Hope you enjoyed the tour.

Oh, I loved the tour. It had some very cool things in it. I especially loved the various skulls they had.

Baltimore is not that far. It would be worth the trip to see it in person.

Why called a dime museum ... umm because Barnum had a dime museum a long time ago—just cost a dime to go in.
Don't forget to visit Harry's SIDESHOW SHOP in New Orleans! It will sell freaky sideshow items. Opening July 14. Ellen |

Actually, when dime museums were around in the middle of the 19th century they rarely cost a dime to get in. Why the name dime museum got stuck to these places is a mystery, as many of them, such as Barnum's American Museum charged twenty five cents and a number of the cheesy ones on the Bowery in NY charged a nickel. I guess it's the same quirk as calling a ten-in-one a sideshow when it ain't on the side of anything!
