When I study, I find that it's best to do it before I go to sleep and just after waking up. Right now, I have no set time for practicing magic. I just do it whenever I feel it, but I think it's working against me. What time do you find works best for you?

Each person is different - based on schedules of other needs... school, work, family... what you need to do is identify time available, and set a practice schedule. Just as sports teams have set practice days and times, so must you.
treat your magic time as something you are expected and responsible to attend. Try to practice away from distractions as well. Personally, I am not a morning person, I prefer to work with my magic in the evening, after dinner...

In the late afternoon, before dinner is my favorite time to practice, but if I have the motivation I will continue it after dinner. If you are married and / or have kids, you must be careful not to ignore them. I kind of did as a young man, and regret it. My family is intact, but looking back, I wish I would have spent more time nurturing my kids instead of nurturing my magic. Now that I'm retired, I have plenty of time to work on magic, but can't forget to spend time with my wife. Balance!

My advice would be to write down some sort of "Time Table/Days schedule" and adhere to it. My Schedule goes something like this: 9am to 10.30am = Domestic duties. 10.30am to 11.30am = Telephone calls and Letters. 11.30am to 12.30pm = Lunch/Brunch/ Break. 12.30pm to 2pm = Rehearsals/Practice 2pm to 3pm = Script writing etc. etc. etc. It doesn't always work out because of unforseen circumstances sometimes. i.e. Can't be arsed to get out of bed today!! (only joking). But its good to have some sort of agenda. Hope this helps. Chris

Practice whenever you get the opportunity. I've found that it's very difficult to practice after I go to sleep and before I get up. Although I sometimes have some very vivid "magic" dreams.

To me it depends on what it is I'm practicing. Certain manipulations I practice while being on The Magic Café. Certain manipulations I practice while watching television. Certain manipulations I practice while falling asleep in bed. Certain manipulations I practice while walking in a store. Stage or parlor sized illusions are practiced while doing nothing else. Like I mentioned, it all depends.

What is this with everything having to be so optimal and planned in detail or theorized to death?
The best time to practise is when you are having the most fun doing it. Having fun stimulates learning much more than picking an optimal time of the day, if you are really that concerned about your learning agility. Michael |

Michael talks a lot of sense here. It's better to practice for 20 minutes and love doing it than to force yourself to endure 3 hours of torture!
It doesn't end there however, there are tips and techniques that can help you to enjoy it and make it fun too. Sometimes just understanding what is actually happening on an internal level and how we are learning can help as well. My website is being "refurbished" with some squishy new bits but when it's up you can sign up for a free newsletter all about practice techniques with hints, tips and techniques, stories and anecdotes. Remember also that it is the quality of the practice that makes a difference too. |

I like to practice late at night where there is no distractions.

Practice when you are happy so you associate practice with being happy. Then when you are unhappy you can practice to make yourself happy again.
I just used the word "happy" too many times, but you get the drill. |

I keep a few new things on my desk at home all the time. That way when I sit at the desk I naturally pick up something and start to practice. Another thing I have been doing lately is watching DVD's at work over lunch. I have an hour lunch and my work PC has a DVD player so it works for me.

Hello Psycho Power J,
I'm not sure what outcome you want and why the time of day has anything to do with the solution to achieving what you indeed want. You said the following: "Right now, I have no set time for practicing magic. I just do it whenever I feel it, but I think it's working against me." Are you concerned you are not practicing enough to reach your goals? Do you believe you need to set a time to practice instead of doing it whenever you feel like it? If so, you have answered you're own question, set a time and do it when it is convenient for you for what works for someone else won't necessarily work for you. Always wishing the best, Adam |

When practicing how many here laugh as you begin to make up your patter?
There are times when I am practicing, standing before a mirror and I begin to make up patter (recording it as I do) and I say something that is really funny, not funny to an audience but to me as it is really stupid and I bust our laughing. I then usually look in the mirror and carry on a conversation with myself for about a minute or two..(perhaps a litle much information here)..don't tell anyone about this talking and answering myself while looking in the mirror. However it often leads to some very interesting patter. I find it more difficult to pratice my patter than to actually practice the effect...let me rephrase that. Not difficult to "pracatice" the patter but difficult to get it where I want it. Using the proper inflection and pauses and what to me at the time seems like a good line. Then trying it out on one of my worse critics (wife, son-in-laws, and daughters) they look at me and say "that is stupid no one talks like that especially you". Most of the time they are right. But at times it works. It works because the audience I am performing for does not know me as my family does. Guess this strayed from the topic but I feel better now that I posted it. Thanks, especially if you got this far reading.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

I found that practicing while traveling in the bus or train works good for me. At least, when it is not to busy. Shuffling cards seems to be very interesting for the average traveler, so if it is to busy people will start looking at your hands.
The only disadvantage is that there is no table or so, to put you cards on. |
