If the hat is party of a costume and character, you can break normal hat etiquette rules. If I'm not performing, I'm out of costume and the hat comes off.
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

Sometimes its good to have a hat even if you're not going to wear it. The hat can help establish your character. You can put things in it, take things out, perhaps even switch a gaff in or out. You can make a really nice bow while holding the hat in your hand. In some situations it can also be something for other people put money into. All without getting hat-hair.

My hat is a key part of my costume, as you can see from my avatar. I feel it helps establish my raffish character. I wear a Stetson felt fedora. I also have a dress straw Stetson for outdoor performances when it's hot. I buy my hats at World of Hats in Pasadena, CA. They have an excellent selection and breadth of sizes.

For out door parties I wear a rolled Panama straw hat, which I bought from an Equadorian coop.

I don't normally perform with a Sherwood cup on my head. That's just a thing I did for my avatar.
However, while doing Western Theatrical work, I found that the hat quite often determines the audience's predisposition as to what kind of character you are playing. This is also true of magic. When I performed at Dickens on the Strand in Galveston, I performed as a character named "Professor Palmer." The hat was a 7" tall, grey, Victorian top hat. I also used this kind of hat when I performed at kid birthday parties. For the Merlin shows, I wore a wizard's pointy hat. It took me about 5 years of work to figure out the best way to make one of these, because a hat of this kind has to hold up for at least 8 weeks in some of the worst weather you will experience. My latest acquisition was a Christie's bowler. They aren't cheap. But they are the real McCoy. They are made from a very stiff felt that resounds with a "bonk" when you tap the hat. It's not suitable for a melon load unless you have a perfectly sized melon, though. It's too stiff. The best hats I have ever seen, probably the best hat shop on the continent of Europe is this one http://www.hutmacher.de/en/index.html . One thing for sure. Trying to save money by buying a cheap hat is false economy. If you can buy a hat for $150 that will last five times as long as a hat that costs you $75, how much have you really saved?

A few years ago I bought some Hats Incredible. Sort of Chapeau/Trouble wit meets hats.
Besides the two advertised the hat can also become muscles, a fish, a goblet, binoculars, ....(and much more that you will come up with) I also have been using hats in theatre and in my own work for years. In fact one of my stage dressing has been a brass hat stand. Anyone else use Hat's Incredible? Hats all folks.. Harris

IF you guys want hats. Go to Rands hat co. In montana they can make anything you want I mean anything! Or http://www.morenohats.com/ These American hatters are Awesome and will make anything you want. That can stand up to Rain and wind they are made for the real world. Custom made hats rule they can stamp your name inside, put your name on the outside anything if the are good. But Nothing worth having is cheap. So if you are cheap and want to look cheap, go to hats in the belfry, go to the mall. I would love to see a post of one of you super cool magicians with your new hat.

Bill7, Here is me in my new beaver felt fedora...a bargin at $175 I love hats and have been wearing a fedora for about 16 years. Harry Anderson is who I fasioned myself after, the hat and arm garter (seen in "Hello Sucker") just looks classy to me. The fedora became a part of me and I wear one everywhere now. Tried a bowler, a top hat and a few others but none felt right.

I get my fedoras from Epaulet, a small menswear store in Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. They use traditional a Made in America supplier and are very nice and affordable (around $80) I'd love to get a higher end hat (esp the tattered poet's hat from the Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester) but right now I lose and damage accesories too much too afford it.
