I was recently surprised when I was reading Bobo's ebook and it mentioned 'those easy tricks which can be mastered in five minutes'. I always thought that these only came about when the internet came about, and flashy adverts could be plonked about all over websites, but Bobo's book is over fifty years old. So, my question to you is how long have 'perform in five minutes' effects been around for and, if it is a long time, why people keep mentioning 'new, gimmicky effects' as if they are some new threat to magic?

My apologies if this has been mentioned here before!

I don't any trick being performed in five minutes never mind mastered in five minutes. It's a hype to sell a product.
It takes time to get everything smooth for a good performance and a lot more time to actually master an effect.

As with any industry, marketing vocabulary is attacked by those looking to keep hold of the industry themselves, or those looking to remain in the "good ole days" and do not easily welcome change.

There are some effects that can literally be LEARNED in 5 minutes... however MASTERED would not be a term I use.

To master something, you must know it intimately, you must have experienced it in many facets, and many different ways... that only comes with time.

How long has that been around? As long as people have been trying to sell stuff.

I don't think there is any trick you can master in 5 minutes. Let us not even talk about the techniques, other aspects such as presentation and showmanship of any trick will take some time. This goes for self working tricks too.

That said...you might be able to "perform it in five minutes" but doing it correctly or even well? That's another story.

No such thing as a 5 minute mastered trick. Just pure ad jibberish. It has been going on for as long as I can remember.
