Here is my review of this effect,I hope you enjoy.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=1903 Colossal Blizzard I have to start out by saying how much I love the speed of Penguin's servers... Always super fast when grabbing downloads. Brilliant! That being said onto the performance. (Keep in mind I have owned neither KK or Blizzard) No offense to Tony, but a clearer demo would have been useful for me to make a more informed purchase. That being said I still like the effect. As always Oz is a great teacher, and the performance of the effect is extremely well done. After seeing the full performance with Oz's handling I was still loving this effect. It was nicely executed and in the spectators mind I could see how they would believe that you only used blank cards (clean) and their chosen card. The handling is very easy and very simple. Obviously you cannot do this with a borrowed deck, and a small amount of setup is required. But even for walk around, keeping a spare deck for this effect in your pocket and giving it a hearty shuffle whilst introducing the effect is enough to make the setup unnoticable. I should also note that personally, I would not perform this completely surrounded. You have to be really careful of angles, but I expected as much. I loved the way Oz ended this effect with a reversed fan, to me there is no way in the spectator's mind that you were working with anything but a blank deck of cards and their selected card. Not too much can be said in this review without revealing a large majority of the effect, but let me just say that I WILL use this. I may not use this often, but it will be great for performing at home when I have people around. To address the questions posed in another thread I agree completely with Oz in regards to spectators wanting to examine the deck after the effect. If you perform this correctly, there should be no spectators insisting that the deck is gimmicked. And as Tony said in an earlier Penguin thread "have you guys never used an invisible deck before?" (or words to that effect) If you can't take the heat off this then I suggest you seriously rethink your crowd management skills. All in all I quite like this effect. It may not be my purchase of the year, it may not be something that I am going to use all that often. But it is indeed something I am grateful to have purchased. You could also use many invisible deck effects with this, such as to have all of the blank faced cards marked with an X (if that fits your performance style). Personally I like the cards all blank, it just looks really clean and a lot less patter is needed to explain it. Your spectators should be saying WOW after this. Well done Tony. Luke |

Just picked this up also and you pretty much summed it up Luke. I was a little upset that the demo doesn't really show that there is a moment where you have to use equivoque (magician's choice) to narrow down the selection. The demo seems a tiny bit misleading but the over all effect is good (and I believe the reactions will be great).
I agree that if proper audience management is used they will not want to examine the whole deck. You can however throw some of the blank cards down near them and let them pick them up to examine them, they just can't examine the whole deck. I agree that I probably won't perform this very often but expect to get great reactions when I do. Allen |

I have a no switch method where spectator NAMES a card (NO equivoque) and the entire deck can be examined. I will NOT market this, as I don't want to infringe on Dean Dill's BLIZZARD. He makes his living selling magic. BTW, the use of the name BLIZZARD in Penguin's release IMHO is a mistake. There are other effects with a blank deck finish and they have found their own names for them.

That way, no infringement and you help Dean continue make a living selling magic and we get to see more of the Biro mind at work. Everyone wins. Just a thought because I'm a big fan of both you and Dean.

Title: Colossal Blizzard
Medium: Routine, DVD instructions Arena: strolling, close up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Colossal Blizzard is a routine by Anthony Miller presented on DVD by Oz Pearlman of Penguin Magic fame. The routine is a card is decided upon by the spectator and the rest of the deck is shown to have blank faces. For you that insist that everything they touch must be inspected you’ll want to move on now because you cannot hand the spectator the deck and say “look! It is all blank!”. The rest of us will be fine. The routine is nice and it can surprise a spectator. It should be noted that this isn’t a new concept at all, some noted versions are Dean Dills Blizzard, which is credited as being the inspiration I’m guessing. What I believe is the actual original version of what this is based on, and someone can correct me, is Arscanio’s Nudity Deck, which ends up with a blank deck front and back. So what we have here is another version of an old idea. The quality of the DVD is fine. You have the traditional dark performances and the explanation along with an advanced, in some sense, version. Oz and crew continue to amaze me with their inability to keep the sound insinc with the movement of his mouth. That is just a pet peeve of mine, one of many. The instructions are well done and the camera work is fine, the sound isn’t an issue at all. It would have been nice had a blank deck come with the DVD though. Over all it is a nice little routine more along the lines of something you might do in the living room, not sure if you strollers will want to fill your valuable pocket space up with this deck, that is up to you of course, might be something that excites you. The reset is quick and easy. If this sounds like something that might interest you you may want to compare it with Blizzard to see which way you wish to go. |

I really enjoy this effect. Its quick easy and leaves them stunned. I have started resealing my deck to make it look like I am opening up a new deck. It adds a new level to it I think.

Penguin is now selling this DVD with a blank deck and a regular deck for $20, if you are on the fence about this one. I am still going to pass. I like the idea but would rather do a deck switch and end with an examinable blank deck and let the spectator pick ANY card up front.

Another excellent "blank deck" routine is David Regal's "Deja Vu Deck." The premise is the reverse of Blizzard, and the trick is completely baffling.
"The spectator simply names any card that they like. The magician removes a deck of cards, and claims he will make the named selection vanish from the deck. Spreading out the deck, however all of the cards are seen to be missing the faces. Offering to try to make their card come back, one of the blank-faced cards is very cleanly shown and placed under a spectator's hand. When they lift their hand and turn over the card, they are amazed to see it is their named selection! Instantly Resets and No Table Is Required, Perfect For Walk-Around." Cheers, Jerry |
