Ladies & Gentlemen, (Kidabra Chapter 3 Atlanta Nov. 08 Meeting Minutes)
Had a GREAT Meeting! Attendee's were: Evan Reynolds, Fred Kirkland, Kathy Hoffman, Ron Myers and myself, Aragorn. The main focus was on Puppets. Evan uses "Rocky" and just got an Axtell "Rat" that he has been able to move his "Rocky Routine" over too. Fred has way too many toys....Tipper the Monkey, Skunk, Chocolet the Dog, Rabbit in Hat and Axtell Remote Controlled Drawing Board and others. Kathy uses a Dinosaur with Human Teeth (in Dental Show) and Sampson (which I wasn't sure what he is...lol) Ron does not at this time use puppets but is heavily into Storytelling and saw where they could be added. Aragorn uses Axtell's Magic Drawing Board, Folkmania 3 Headed Dragon and just got Axtell's BigMouth and Shark and is just getting ready to put a Puppet into his show other than "ADB". We discussed how you made the puppet come "Alive" and Fred was a wellspring of information. So the observations were: 1) Keep it moving 2) When opening the mouth only the lower jaw should drop, as this is how people talk (look at yourself in a mirror). Unless your doing something that you do open both lower & upper. 3) Practice with Plenty of Distractions (ie- kids running around house, TV blairing, etc). This will get you use to the real world. 4) Evan mentioned that Ken Scott pointed out to him (Evan) that when Evan was using his other hand (for whatever reason) his puppet was being lifelessly still. You need to make your Puppet Hand able to work on autopilot. We than discussed the "Talking Options". They are: 1) Be or learn to be a Vent 2) Silent Wisperer - this is where the puppet wisper's into your ear and you relay the words. 3) Shadow Talking - sorry, this is what I call it. Both Ken Scott & Tommy John's of our chapter are very good at this. They turn their heads back towards their puppets a little more than sideways and speak with their puppets voice into their Mics. For magician's that do talk their puppet this seems to be the most common. 4) AxTrax Prerecorded scripts or doing your own. Axtell besides the routines for specific characters now has a series of CD's called "Wide Open" which works with any Puppet. Kathy has created her own that she uses a cheap CD player that had a remote control for "Pause/Start". The nice part of that is that Kathy has total control of how long she can talk. Axtells "Wide Open" includes a track with just the music and sound effects for their scripts that you can record your own voices to. We than had a brief discussion on what age was appropriate for puppets......All ages. We than turned our attention to props. Great places for props are "Dollar Tree" and the "Build a Bear Stores". Props add a lot to a puppet routine. The Shark I got from Ken has a slit in the back of the mouth. You can pull our a Hammer and he's a Hammer Head Shark, Cards...he's a Card Shark, Play money he's a Loan Shark. Most of use plan on our Puppets doing some type of trick. Meeting Minutes on the "Business Card" & "BackDrop" portions will show up in a couple of days. Have a wonder day and see you next month! Aragorn The Magician
