I have been performing with the Linking Rings for about twenty years. I am beginning to have interest in the Linking Ropes. Do you think showmanship will be ok with the Linking Rings and the Linking Ropes included in an hour kid's act?

AN HOUR kid's act!!! NO! You obviously spend more time here than doing kid's shows. When a kid's attention span ends, you're done, and lose one kid and the rest follow.

My dvd's are about as comprehensive a treatises on the linking ropes as you will get.
http://magicians.podbean.com/dances-with-rope/
The lecture material on rope has a routine on the linking ropes including performance material for kids shows or adults.
The Dances with ropes has a comprehensive instruction on the linking ropes plus the original methods to enter and leave the routine and branch off into professors nightmare.
Within the instruction of both, you will get a video handling that is not available anywhere else to my knowledge.
The "Dances" routine comes with a an excellant set of linking ropes. The combination of both DVD's will give you the best of all linking ropes routines and detailed instruction.
That material will be in shops soon and distributed thru major retailers. All wholesale suppliers will carry a "more basic" instruction from me than I offer on my site.
The showmanship and inclusion of linking ropes with the linking rings in the same kids show, does not seem to be an issue.
The key to that is the routine. In my kid's show, I do the the linking ropes right after doing a cut and restored effect and use a change bag routine (that routine is on this site) http://www.magicvideodepot.com/main/memb......routine/ .
I then do the linking rings (kidshow version with two assistants as a closer for the kids show http://www.magicvideodepot.com/main/memb......f_Truth/ .

Mike I'd get Ian's Dances with Ropes DVD before even considering trying adding linking ropes to your act. I've done both linking rings and linking ropes, and have done them successfully in the same show, but you have to routine the linking ropes as something other than linking ropes or a trick similar in any way to the ring routine you do. Also, don't follow one with the other.

I'd agree that an hour kids show is a loooonnnngggg show, and if you are going to do one that long you really need to keep the pace high, have a lot of audience participation, etc. to keep their attention.

You must have been in the "paddy" wagon too long. Smile Smile Smile

Magic Ian, I like the video. I will purchase your ropes and DVD from you.

Photius, sounds good, do not perform back to back. But how about using one to blend into the other. Jeff McBride has this on a video. Let's say I was doing a rope routine first. Next, I added one ring to penetrate a rope. Next, I put the ropes down and use seven more rings.

I have been performing a eight Chinese Linking Ring routine for over 20 years. Don't worry about me doing a one hour show. Paddy does not know what he's talking about. I have been performing one hour shows for about 15 years. I keep the kids attention with my character.

Ok, I just ordered Ian's Dances with Ropes DVD. I will be glad when it gets here.

Is Jeremy Pei's Powerful Rope Magic worth getting too?

I have been a children's entertainer full time, not one show a month, for 12 years. I do know what I am talking about. I have had several articles on the subjest published in major magic magazines. Mike YOU are the one who has no knowledge of the real world. Like the old saying, those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. You spend so much time posting and so little time doing.

Mike, I've seen Jeff's routine, and it works well for him, I'm not so sure it would work well in a kids show. The key is to not make the two so similar. In otherwords there are a lot of ways to use linking ropes that does not mirror what you are doing with linking rings. Ian's DVD has some great stuff there, as wonderful "tricks of the trade" for handling the ropes themselves.

Just don't try to do linking ropes as linking rings done with ropes and do linking rings in the same set. To repetitious.

As for you keeping kids entertained with your character, you sure keeps us entertained with your character. LOL.

Routining is more than a game of word association. ie: rope, then ring on rope, then rings then silk and rings, then silks.
The transitions really have to blend unnoticed. I like the guy who does silk to egg, then multiplying eggs, then cracks one and gets the silk back. There is a flow and reason to that rather than just because the object is there, so do it.
The silent act needs a flow, the kids how has the patter to break it up. More transition in the kid show and the bottom line is that tey stay in their seats.

Dan Harland has a routine that combines the two efects perfectly. it starts out as a linking ring routine but ends up as an linking roupe routine. as the rings becomes ropes during the routine. it can be fpund as a bonus in his old Videro the band shark

Thanks Vibono.

Are you sure it is "Band Shark," because I do not see anything mentioned about a bonus. http://mymagic.com/harlan.htm

I notice that 'Jeremy Pei's Powerful Rope Magic' web site has been suspended (http://millennia.websitewelcome.com/suspended.page/). I can't see any other suppliers either.

Its not quite a maninstream effect yet, I believe its only a trial deal from Pei.
You can find similar effect in a trick called "Sam's Ropes" that dealers carry thru Robbins, from Sam Dalal. I was extremely surpised to see that the routine was comparable and very well explained.
Basic difference is the performance level that jeremy gives. Otherwise, the effect is quite standard.

Well I've just ordered your 'Dances with..' DVD and rope set (I've e-mailed & paypal'd).
I looked at various options on the market, and despite the long haul delivery, felt that your work would integrate very well with my current material.
I also brought an instant download from you, and was impressed by your clear instruction and thinking.
Now where's that postman..!
