I have been looking for a close up case that I could carry with me that does not look like I am carrying a tool box or hard make-up case. I travel a lot and like to have my bag with me. I was looking for a laptop type bag or backpack that would also be functional as a close up case. The problem I had was the organization in the bags. I felt like my stuff was just dumped in a large compartment and that was not good at all. I was looking at camera bags and finally found one that works perfectly what I need. It is a camera bag that is a backpack. Here is the link. http://www.tamrac.com/frame_adv.htm

What I like is there are extra dividers that you can put in the camera section to make more pockets. It has 5 pockets in the camera section and several small pockets in the front for things like silks and thumb tips, etc. I also like the bigger part up top because it has a net in the back to hold my plethora of Outlaw books. What do you think and has anyone else had this problem?

Very nice compartments and looks like a lot of space in those. Thanks for putting the site up.

With all the different compartments it is really useful and practical for managing the props and accessories.

For those not in the know, Tamrac is the #1 name in photographer's equipment management systems. If you look around ebay, you should be able to find some of their bags and cases for the bargain prices of $60-$100.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

Outlaw books are not "instructional" magic books. They are props used in some fantastic magic effects from Outlaw Magic.

You know that after all these years, I still use a leather Doctor's Bag.

My wife is a doctor. She does not use one!

Go figure!

At one time Ricky Jay carried his close-up gear in a violin case. If I'm not mistaken Bob Read had done this periodically too. I don't know did it first, but I don't know of anyone doing it now.

http://www.allheart.com/internstudent.html has this to say about the Doctors' Bag:
"Great For Getting Through Busy Airports. Just carry the bag and say, "Doctor coming through. Make way!" (just a joke)".
The presentation makes the magic.

I use the Overland Cargo Style Briefcase. After searching for a long time, I finally found a perfect case for close-up/restaurant prop storage. I almost bought a Doctor's bag, but it seemed kind of pointless to spend $50-$150 for a leather bag with only two pockets inside, and even smaller than the one I got. Also the medical bag is thick on the bottom but narrow on top. I looked at every briefcase, and camera case there was, and the one I found in Walmart in the stationary section was perfect.

The leather ones with wheels are nice, but too big and not really needed for restaurants. http://www.amazon.com/Overland-Travelwar......3&sr=8-1

Here is the only actual one I seen online but mine is black. It is 16 x 12 x 4, and I like those dimensions better for more overall room. Ironically the best one I liked was also the cheapest one there, $15.00. I also saw "mini-backpacks" used for toiletries I think that would work well, but I prefer a briefcase for more room to store promotional materials, which also fit perfectly in the side pocket. There is quite a few pockets inside, pockets within pockets etc, and I was very happy with it for the price.

So if you are looking for a cheap yet nice looking briefcase go to Walmart and check them out. They are very compact, and small enough to be out of the way wherever you store them, yet have plenty of room for all of your close-up props. You can fit carfs into the pockets easily inside, sharpies/pens in the holders on the outide, coins in the smaller pockets, and larger props in the main pockets with a divide, etc.

Product Description
The Overland Soft Side Brief Bag lets you carry your laptop with ease. The brief bag is made of rugged leather-look black PVC vinyl, and fits most laptops up to 14.5" wide. Featuring two exterior pockets located on the front and back of the bag and multiple pockets inside of the bag along with a padded interior and section for your working files. Stay organized while on the go!

The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini
