The World Magic Awards is going to be aired on the same network as the masked magician specials.
Are they stupid? Who is in charge of the World Magic Awards?

It's been on that network every year. Maybe they're contractually obligated? Maybe no major network would pick it up? Maybe this would bring in new viewership?

Most likely no one else wanted to carry it.

Contractually obligated my ***.
Any court or judge would favor the Magic Awards should they want to back out of it. All of a sudden the channel wants to be positive towards magic? At the same time they want destroy it?

If the channel is contradicting itself by exposing magic and then airing a show praising it, I would let them back out if I was a judge.
If the channel wants to hurt what the award show is for, the award show should be able to back out. I am sure that stuff like this has happened before with contracts.

Just so you don't think you've won, I'm not having this conversation anymore. Please do educate yourself a little.

First of all, what court would really care about such trivial matters. Second, if they did, the Masked Magician shows have been around longer than the World Magic Awards. Go ahead, look it up. They have both taken several years hiatus, but the masked man was here first. In fact, I can only find about 4 instances of the World Magic Awards ever even occuring. These days it seems to be sort of a benefit show for the Feed the Children charity.
The World Magic Awards show is produced by Gay Blackstone. Gay is a fine lady who has done a lot for magic over the years, but last year's show was awful. So many shots of the audience when we should be looking at the performer. Poor Andrew Goldenhersh's time was cut down to about 30 seconds. The beauty of his magic, is that it happens so slow. It may not be her fault, that kind of thing usually falls on the director who calls the shots and the editor who cuts it together. I can never find out how these awards are decided. I think it is more or less just pick and choose who you'd like to have on the TV show. Is there voting, a competition like WMS, SAM, IBM or FISM? It doesn't seem to be that way. It's almsot like boxing or wrestling with so many orginizations, almost anyone can win an award and call themselves a world champion. I mean, Pam Anderson won one last year for "Best Assistant." Now that there isn't a big name celebrity that took her place on the strip, I wonder who will win that category this year? That was just a huge insult to the many wonderul assistants who have been doing this for decades. How about Pam Thompson, Jinger, ANY of the girls in Lance's show, or David's show. What garbage. The World Magic Awards seem to me to be about a half step above the IMS Merlin Awards, which previous winner Murray Sawchuck has admitted was a publicity stunt. |

Maybe the Masked Magician will win a special award for advancing magic by exposing the old stuff.

What organization is behind the World Magic Awards?

I belive there isn't one. It is just the World Magic Awards. That's what my arguement is all about. All the major orginizations have their own contests and awards. IBM, SAM, WMS, FISM The Magic Circle and AMA all have their own awards which are either competed for or voted upon by members. I would say that all of these are more prestigious, and I don't believe Pam Anderson has an award from any of those groups.

I've never felt the World Magic Awards was a legitimate awards show.
It's a TV variety show where they give out parting gifts to whoever they happen to have booked that night. It's framed as an 'awards' show so that they have an excuse to show a variety of performers but the awards themselves have little meaning. Fun to watch though... |

I love that people are just ready to bash and torch anybody and anything. So we should not watch Fox or their affiliates (upn, mynetwork, fox family) for running the Masked Magician specials for "hurting" magic?
What about all the good they did for magic? They ran repeats of David Blaine the first World Magic Awards on Fox Family, they still run repeats of Masters of Illusion, 4 episodes of Masters of Illusion "Impossible Magic" and the last 2 World Magic Awards on mynetwork....and I'll bet they are going to run the new upcoming 13 episodes of masters of illusion too. What about blaming Nash productions? They made the Masked Magicians specials...should we tar and feather them?....but wait, they also hired myself and Penn & Teller to make a girl vanish on a reality show they produced called "who want's to marry my dad". They respected the magic, props, and wanted it to look perfect. They had respect for magic that day. Fox affiliates also run a show called "Wrestlings biggest secrets revealed". They also show WWE wrestling. I didn't see WWE making them stop running it or not doing business with the network because of it. Millions of people still watch and enjoy wrestling...even though they know deep down inside it's not real......sound familiar? Saying Associated Television shouldn't do business with fox or affliates is stupid. Not watching good magic like WMA or Masters of Illusion on tv because of Valentinos made up crap being on the same network is also stupid. TV networks are a business, so are production companies. They are in it to make money. They have no loyalities to magicians, wrestlers, or any other professions. Its not personal, its business. Enjoy and be happy we have decent magic to watch on TV. |
