What is the best way to control a card to the top or the bottom under the watchful eyes of the spectator? Smile

There are a variety of methods. None of them are considered "the one and only best". Some are better than others, depending on the effect, the magician's skill level, and what the focus is.

A double undercut might be a wonderful control for an effect, but it doesn't work well for an Ambitious Card Routine.

A skilled magician has several controls amongst his "tools" and knows when and where to apply each one. And they will all be successful "under the watchful eye of the spectator".

IMO the pass is the cleanest (if mastered) but not always the most appropriate. Learn as many controls as you can and with experience you will know which control is the best for a particular routine.

My two favorites are double undercut and jog shuffle. I usually do a riffle shuffle after the card is controlled to the top.

IMHO, I think each magician should have his/her own "BEST" card control method(s) which they feel extremely comfortable to perform.

To me, double undercut and Hermann pass are the most comfortable moves.

There are so many to choose from and as a newbie to magic, I am finding more all the time. My personal favorites thus far are:
Overhand In-Jog shuffle - looks like a shuffle
Hindu shuffle control - Very interesting loking shuffle.
Spread Pass - Doesn't look like anything.

Many of the magicians on this forum can do fantastic things with cards. I just offer the ones that have been most reasonable for me to aquire.
Magic is fun!!!

i like to use the in-jog shuffle to get a card to the top; and a double undercut to get to the card to the bottom. once you have the card in place, throw in some more false overhand shuffles.

done casually, and with some time misdirection, it won't seem like you're doing anything fishy.

Buy Royal Road to Card Magic and you'll learn that with the overhand shuffle in the first chapter ! (well one of the method). And it's a really good and cheap book.

A dip cover-pass with a little rifle at the end works great for me. If you want to control the card to the top just attain a break ABOVE the chosen card, whereas to control the card to the bottom just attain a break BELOW the chosen card. I prefer to get the card to the bottom and cop it out rather then palming it from the top when doing card to pocket (or in my case, card to zipper Smile ) routines.

My absolute favorite is a Post Control to bottom and if I want it to top I just shuffle until I can leave the last card at top. Smile

I do a couple of passes well enough but never use them in performance because heavy misdirectio/direction is needed to cover.

It is easier to casually do a double undecut for a top control....hindu/end draw shuffle control to top is good except who really shuffles cards this way. I wont go into side steals for now...not too dificult and done well are clean but they take guts to do in front of people.

whatever you use and any is fine...work towards a casual and natural flow and feel.

good luck, relax, have fun,

Bryan

I use a hindu shuffle every once in a while.
I love the overhand shuffle since it looks so simple and almost anyone who plays cards has learned to do it.
