Some recent Q & A on Spectre.
Q- What are the dimensions? A- 6 5/8” Tall X 3 3/4” wide X 4 1/2” deep. Q- Weight? A- With batteries, about 2+ pounds. Q- Does it use a speaker? A- Heck no! Q- I understand that the sound of the knock can vary, depending on the surface it sits on and the surrounding space and materials. I imagine, with the sound originating in a distant place, the rapping might sound quite different due to the distance, echoes, and the route traveled. - Ron Martin A- Spectre was designed acoustically. I am by trade a specialist in sound. The best places for this unit are on wood surfaces out of view of the spectator. But, being out of view is very desirable for sound also. A knock on a resonant dresser coming from your upstairs bedroom, that is being heard down in your Living room takes on a whole different timbre than if the unit was close by. It takes on the frequencies of the furniture or shelf etc. Not to mention the ambience and space that shapes the sound with reflections and such. I can get a deep human like knocking sound from certain spots in my home, with lots of low end in the sound. Really spooky. If I choose to I can get a more tapping type sound as you hear on the web site. (Limitations of the recording process.) Recording a really remote sound and getting it to sound like your ears hear it is very tricky as most of the frequencies at distance are missed by the mic and recording shortfalls. Q- How, in the usual setting, is this classy box not suspected as some sort of source of the sound by anyone looking around the area afterwards? - Ron Martin A- I (sometimes) use it as a pedestal for a trophy when the spec will go investigate, but that has only happened once. Another way is to put it on bookshelves with a false book end binding front. (East to make). Or simply put it behind books or in a closet. (Closets are great!) Never had anyone in my tests open the closet and look. You'll come to see that hiding is not an issue. Q- What have you done if a spectator wants the ghost to do something other than knock? A- I ask the ghost. Sometimes the ghost is very shy. Q- What do you do if the spec tries to play “hot and cold” when homing in on the sound? A- The most important thing to remember is, the old adage: Leave them wanting more. This effect should be used sparingly in order to keep it real spooky. Once the spectator gets used to the sound, they will not be frightened, and then they’ll try to find it. So if they do try to home in on it, my ghost won’t play with them- my ghost leaves. Use it once, twice, three times max. Again, the Shock of the first couple of ‘callings’ by the ghost creates an massive impression in the specs head. Don’t water that down! Q- What is the usual reaction from your victims? A- Depending what else in going on in the room, the first set of knocks usually get a “what is that?” from the spec. The second set is the real clincher. This is when the spec is really paying attention. I have had to calm some people down after the second set of knocks. (If someone gets real upset I yell at the ghost to leave. Again a warning: PLEASE DON’T USE THIS ON CHILDREN OR NERVOUS TYPES.) I sometimes go to a third set if the spec thinks it was hot water pipes, or if they think I have a stooge planted. Once they see I do not, I hit them with the third AND FINAL clincher. After that, my ghost observes the International Brotherhood of Spectres union rules, and quits work. Remember; Leave them haunted not taunted. |
