I'm currently working on a new story linked to (ex) Route 666.
If someone living in Albuquerque OR somewhere close to the route 666 in NM can help me with this, I'd appreciate. I need an enveloppe (A4) send from this place to me (I'll give my adress in MP), with one or two flyers from the place (mentionning route 666 should be delightful) and 4 blank american A4 sheet of papers (Europe A4 is different). Thanks in advance. |

I spend considerable time in Southern Utah (Saint George). Is that close enough to be any help?
Also, One of my best friends bikes a lot around there (666). I'll speak with him and see if he is headed there anytime soon. Come to think of it, If he goes, mayby I'll head out with him. What is your timeframe? Will it help if American bikers are sending it?

I think that the road begins in Monticello Utah. My biker buddy owns a home in Moab, and I think that is only about 45 Minutes (by bike) away from Monticello. He actually lives in Salt Lake at present.
I might be able to work it out reasonably well. I'll talk to my friend (Stan). He knows a lot of people in them thar parts if he isn't headed there soon. Just let me know if that will do.

It's perfect, thanks Michael.
I'm a biker too... The schedule is very short, 8 days max. In case of, Utah is fine. I pm you my address, but you must still have it. |

I believe I do still have your address actually, I still have something else to send to you.
I'll see if I can mobilize my friends to get it done. I should know within two days how well I can accomplish this. Today perhaps (as it is morning in Utah). I'll PM you with additional details. We must Ride together one day. We'll talk bikes later.
Beware of this and that.

It is not route 666, it is route 66, now I-40 (in parts, other parts run through town) I lived off of it in Amarillo, TX and have been on it many times in Albuquerque.
I get up to Albuquerque from time to time, I'll try to remember to pick up some flyers about Albuquerque and Route 66 for you (but there isn't a lot of that out there, not one of the things the Albuquerque tourist and visitor's bureau pushes. But to save you a lot of time, type in Albuquerque New Mexico visitor's Bureau and or Albuquerque New Mexico Chamber of Commerce, you will find email links there where you can request such and they will be happy to send them to you, even to a foreign address.

Some wonderful old ghost towns in New Mexico--Look up Cabezon, Elizabethtown, Madrid, Mongollon--way too many to list. The Southwest was just too tough to die.

State Route 666 (Arizona) officially no longer exist sand the stateroads dept. paid thousands of tax payer dollars to change signage, etc. It used to run into a staunchly Mormon town and they fought the connotations of the superstition for a short period after stern fundamentalist believers took umbrage at the route number, which had existed for many, many years.
It does run through some pretty mountains, however.

Curator et al,
I'm sure many of you know this already but in case you don't, there was a wonderful short lived tv show on HBO Cable here in the U.S. a few years back called Carnivale. It's combination, modern American myth with a hero's journey/father quest weaving religion, magic, mysticism, carnival, con artistry, Americana, emigre's, and a man by the name of Alexi............. HBO for some really stupid reason cancelled the show after 2 seasons without warning so the story just sort of, STOPS! No conclusion =*( Well so I have been told. The network websites suggets they did not renew because they finished telling the story. I guess I'll find out when I finish it. Hopefully next week sometime. I believe the box sets are still available, I'm watching borrowed copies right now. But it's fantastic. Curator, between this Route 666 piece and your lastest Coney Island piece it seems like Carnivale would be right up your ally. Here's the network site and info. http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/

US Route 666 ran from southern Arizona, through the western part of New Mexico northward into Utah. The most dangerous part was in New Mexico from Gallup to Shiprock (which is near Farmington, NM). There were many fatal accidents because the road was not designed for the heavy traffic it carried and many of the drivers on it were intoxicated.
As the result, because of the number 666 it was called the Devil's Highway. Around 2003, the number 666 was completely eliminated and the New Mexico portion became US 491. Other parts of 666 were given various other numbers. The highway has been physically improved in recent years. It can still be dangerous because of the drunk drivers that frequent it. (I live in Albuquerque, and I have driven in that part of New Mexico.)

I've seen Carnivale, don't worry
And the location for the story about route 666 is somewhere between Gallup and Shiprock. |

Curator,
Bill and I are both in Albuquerque. Shoot me an eMail robertATrobertbloor.com if you need some more info. Bill's info about the name change is accurate. I think with the high number of fatal accidents on the road, the whole 666 thing got a little eerie. While the road is improved, it still has a disproportionate number of fatalities on it. Robert
