I actually wear a top hat and tails most of the time. It fits my character.

If I dress hobo like, they might think I am a drug user. It might keep the crowd from giving me money. In my area, a lot of drug users do beg for money on the streets. Begging might make it harder to receive. For example, if you want the news media to record you to be on camera, don't try showing off because they will think you are not professional.
I want to be myself, so I can show more happiness. It helps make the crowd happier. I want to show the crowd as if I don't need the money. My attire shows I know how to take care of myself. When it comes to closing, "Ask with a smile, don't beg with a frown." |

Here's a rule-of-thumb I've noticed with buskers: hat....apron...vest...or some combination thereof. In all my travels & experiences I've yet to see a single busker who did not have at least ONE of those items. You may say "a hat isn't unusual', true, but only if it's a baseball cap. Otherwise, hats (especialy the fedoras & bowlers favored by buskers) simply aren't seen that often these days. The hat sort of acts as a 'time-portal' taking you back to the days when those types of hats were a common sight. It's sort of the busker's badge signifying that he's carrying on a centuries-old custom. I focus on the hat because unlike the vest & apron (which are used for ditching / stashing) the hat serves no real function*.....it's just a decorative identifier that this guy is a busker.
*Okay, okay.....I know some buskers have incorporated their hats into their acts.*
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.
