Ok, I got Dixie Dooley's Escapology as a bonus with some order I placed. On volume 1, he talks about the 100ft rope escape. If I had to tie someone up with the thinner rope, I'd tie their arms behind their back, lower arms horizontally, like having your arms crossed but behind your back. You can even pull the elbows inward that way. I can see the risk of dislocating your shoulder should you fall, but apart from that, does that make things much more difficult, or does that in fact make it easier? I'd like to know because I want to try this out, but with my luck, someone is going to tie me up that way.

First and most important is do not let anyone tie you up in a position you don't like. General guidelines:
1. Always be standing or seated in chair. 2. Put your arms in the position you want; most people will start tying you up how ever you position yourself. Don't ask, just say, "Tie me up." I usually would put my arms out together if seated or at my sides if standing. 3. Usually the problem is they tie you too lose, and you spend you time trying to make the escape look difficult. Last and most important, Jay Leslie has a DVD out on 100' rope escape. It will answer all your questions and some you don't have yet. |

Practice, practice, practice.
Get a friend to tie you up, over and over and over. Try things like this idea, and learn to deal with them, because they WILL come up sometime.

And that's why I asked here - I like to be prepared (and yes, I was in the boy scouts). Not getting tied up in a position like that is not really what I want to do. I perform mostly mentalism, and I try to meet every challenge people throw at me. And just like it doesn't look good when a mentalist has to say, "Sorry, I can't do that," I don't think an escapologist who can only escape when he is tied up in a convenient way looks good. |

I am a purest. I don't believe adding a pair of handcuffs makes the escape better. To the contrary, I believe that if you escape the cuffs and the rest of the rope falls off you have answered all the questions the audience could ever have. If you use "Skill" to escape the rope, and only use a rope, they could watch you do the escape more than once because it's different every time. If you would like a much better DVD than the one you have, check out the one we offer. It's got two versions with two people. Mark Logsdon tips the secrets on escaping while seated, which is worth the price of admission.

There's an old adage in rope escapes: If you can think of an 'inescapable' tying arrangement, get a trustworthy person to tie you that way and try to get out. Try it, don't just think about it.

And don't let anyone use dental floss...
I mean, that's what I'd use if I REALLY had to tie someone up, which is why I am now working on a method of escape that will not take my hands with it. I hadn't yet thought of the hands behind the back. I've myself only been working on this for a few weeks. I've worked the normal ways, seated and standing, so now I'm working on the more...impossible ways. I'll get my "trusted friend" to try this on me ASAP.

That's partly why I wrote 'trustworthy.'

I have nothing against dental hygiene, as long as it's not tied around my wrists, feet, neck, or body in any way, other than the two fingers I use to floss with.
:D

With this type of escape, the challenge angle sways the percentage against you.

Kondini I really like the pic. Really shows the handcuffs and chains well. Reminds me of a old Randi photo I once saw.
