Hello,
It is many threads about CP, but I anyhow have two questions? 1) How old was you when you start to learn/practice CP? I will guess younger peoples have a faster memorizing. 2) What is your "biggest" problem with CP? Thinking about the grip, balance the coin on a tip, etc.? -Morten- |

I started serious study of the CP about 6 months ago at age 47. It is not yet perfect; however, it has progressed nicely to a level I will describe as serviceable. My biggest problem was getting over the fear of learning it wrong, requiring me to break a bad habit later. I solved this by spending some time with a local coin expert, recommended by a local magic shop. Since then just practice, practice, practice...

I started when very young. I had read in a book that said to have coins in classic palm when walking around, so I did that often with coins in both hands. I don't know how young I was when I started, but it was before I was a teenager. I'm 52 today. I still walk around with coins in classic palm in both hands sometimes today, although not all that often anymore.
I'm still not good at separating one coin out of a stack of coins that are all in classic palm without occasionally making some noise. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the importance of that until the last decade, or so, and so I never spent any time practicing that when young. Your post has reminded me that I need to work on that some more. Recently, I got some soft coins, which should make it easier.

I first started practicing it about a year ago, at a ripe age of 18. Mine is almost perfect in my right hand. I can get it where without any "tells" that I can see, and I can lay my hand flat. However my left hand leaves much to be desired

I think I was about 12 when I started to get interested in coin magic and started working on the cp and other sleights. I'm nearly 58 now and still working on it.

I started with magic when I was 13 years old, mainly cards. In the last years I have also started with coins, but after I find the MagicCafe I have also read about "all the problems" the peoples have. This is the reason for my question. -Morten- |

I was 43 in 2005 when I stumbled into the world of coin magic. I would push the coin into CP, turn my hand over and watch it fall out for a long time. I thought CP was an elaborate joke played on fledgling magicians...
It took me around 6 months to get it workable within a routine (Roths version of Winged silver) and I found that it was actually helpful to train CP in the context of that routine. Of course I was also sitting infront of the tv getting it in and out of CP and always carrying a coin in my hand and I still do those things. Biggest problem I had with it was that my hands became sweaty and the coin would slip. It's not really a problem anymore since sweaty or dry, the coin seems to stick there now that my hands are used to it. |

I started at 38, about 2 years ago. I first learned it in no time at all, but slightly different (read: "wrong") from most people. The coin was pressed slanted down into the center of the palm instead of counter-squeezing with the muscles on the other side. It had a more natural looking hand seen from above but it could flash from across a table.
So a couple of months ago I decided to relearn it in order to get the coin more centered and a little further back. It's frustrating because at the moment I can't do it the new way and I can't do it the old way any longer either. So no coin magic for me until next year at the earliest. You cannot walk around with a coin in your hand practicing if it falls out almost immediately. Things take time. All in all it's been a depressing couple of months as I'm renovating my false shuffle too and it feels like I need to go back to the beginning with everything. All work and no play. But it will be worth it.

I was 23 in 1976....(Nigel....I can do that math....23 + 32...carry the puppet...divided by the bald spot...add in the occassional hand cramps...from over practicing....Harris is now old enough to drive the speed limit...)
One of the main problem, was my concentrating on technique, and not routining, and character development...(on and off stage)

I started at age 12. I used a cheap poker chip which was sanded down to about the size of a half dollar. Slightly bigger. It was much easier to palm than a standard coin. I thought it was great for a beginner.
I'd much rather regret something I've done than something I was too afraid to do. Have a great day. Rachel.

I remember this well. I was in 7th grade. Took Dover paperback edition of Bobo with me everyday to school. I constantly got in trouble in class for dropping coins on my desk and floor while practicing palms, vanishes, etc... Had to use quarters back then due to hand size.

I was somewhere between 12-14. I had problems, but I just didn't know it. It was many, many years later that I learned not to stick my thumb and pinky out.
In the years between then and now, I did very little sleight of hand, so I seldom used the CP.

The best magicians have started as early as seven years old. There is no way you'll be a master of the CP if you didn't start early in life. I have been practicing the CP since I was 6 yrs old.
There are certain little secrets in mastering this move that only a very few of the world's best close-up magicians know about. Good luck - |

I can type with a coin in CP, and it took me many months to get it without slipping. It still slips out when I type. I can hold it in classic palm position for hours working while sorting screws, no problem.
Vinny's classic palm looks just like mine. I do hope that if I keep practicing my hand will look natural eventually. I don't drop it out constantly anymore (unless I'm typing or stretching the muscles), just hope it's not the end of the road for me with the CP. Vinny showed me the crimp palm, and I've been using it for awhile now with one of Rannie's routines. It's the routine "A Tribute to Roth", I believe. I started practicing the classic palm in March of this year. So about 6 months, off and on. Hardest part by far is doing a coin roll with a coin in CP, and having the hand look natural. I can drop coins in a stack one at a time in CP, no problem. |

I started working on my CP at 11 years. Now at 17, I feel it is pretty good. If I don't do it for a couple of days, it feels odd, but eh.
The biggest problem I have is having my thumb stick out when I go into the CP. I am working on it. Juliegel |
