Do any of you perform this effect.? It is a really good trick. I just wish you could do it walk around. If anyone has a walk-around handling, please share it! Thanks for any comments.

I got a question why do people love this effect? I don't think it is even close to the power of other Simmon effects.

I don't like it as much of some of Simon's other effects, but the reactions are REALLY good and it is fun to perform. I don't even know if I want to use this yet. Doesn't seem my style to do an effect like this, but it would be neat to hear some different ideas about it.

I think Andrew has highlighted the key point here. Spectators really do really like this effect and it has a great overall impact. It's not my style either, but great to use once you find a way to incorporate it that you are comfortable with.

I saw the video, and owning all of Simon's other material, I was impressed. However, it is not great for table hopping because of the state of the card (so to speak) and I personally do not like his force or his switch. Still, it's relatively cheap and if you can iron out the flaws it might be worth the money!

I perform it professionally in my restaurant work and it KILLS which is the only thing that matters to me.
The force Simon suggests is disregarded by many magicians because they think it's too simple. I know tons of different forces, many of them difficult, but the force Simon suggests is the exact force I use in this routine because with the time misdirection it works perfectly. Re. the second switch, I perform the same one Simon recommends but I change the timing by a split second which makes all the difference and avoids the discrepancy...simply perform it while pointing to the deck with your other hand and stating that they can stop there, start over, or go further in the deck. Bottom line, don't buy it because I'd like to be the only one performing it. |

I use it. It kills people!!!
However, I don't like the first switch (pocket)... I don't think we can get away with that... work out your own way! But the effect is great!! Michael Lam

Do Doc Eason's Happy Birthday trick from one of his bar magic videos. It blows people away and gives you a similar effect. The spectators signature appears on a card they "know" could not possibly be the one they signed. It is killer. Here's a tip, use it in conjunction with Kennedy's Mystery Box and you will take all the heat off the switch and make the effect three times as powerful.

It's completely logical because you need to put the instruction card somewhere to free up your hands to handle the deck, and there's tons of time misdirection since it's switched way before the ending of the trick. The only way to tell if something works is to try it for laymen, and I can tell you that it ALWAYS works for me. Nothing wrong with coming up with your own method, but for me it would be fixing something that's not broken. |

Is the card sort of a white board or do you need refills?

It needs refills. The effect comes with about a dozen refills and you can buy additional refills in quantities of a dozen.
A white board type of material wouldn't make sense because it would be obvious to the audience that you could wipe the signature off and that would defeat the purpose of having the card "permanently" signed in the first place. Plus part of the strength of the effect (and other effects using a signed card in my opinion) is that at the end of the trick you give the card to the spectator as a souvenir. |

I also think this is a great effect and wondered if anyone could recommend an alternative switch (that they actually use) to those described in the notes. I generally use the first method described but occasionally would like to use an alternative (i.e. when I have no shirt pocket). The notes do include an alternative switch but require the list card to be modified. Is it possible to purchase duplicate list cards?

Put both hands in your pants pockets, with the right hand switch the card in the right pants pocket and with the left hand retrieve the deck from the left pants pocket. Timing helps with this type of switch...remove your left hand an instant before you remove your right hand so that spectators' eyes focus on the left hand. This is the exact type of switch used by many professionals (but usually in the outside jacket vs. pants pockets), e.g., Daryl used it to accomplish the ending of his Ambitious Card routine. |

I have the effect and my only negetive comment is the switch. A freind has come up with a switch incoporating the card case which is clean and goes by undetected. The reaction to this trick in the laymens eyes is well worth the money. Altought the froce is deeemed simple by most magicians in the laymens eyes it is completly fair.

Does anyone think this trick might be a little too perfect? As in, there reaction is..."I must have signed that card with the writing on it." I think that is the impression that one of my audiences had. They looked at me blankly and raised their brows. Nothing else.I am probably paranoid and they were just silenced because it amazed them so much. Who knows....

Well .......
At the start of the routine you show both sides of the "instruction" card .... |

I view a trick as "too perfect" when the audience is likely to reach the only logical conclusion to the secret (for example, in most handlings of Cigarette Through Coin I've seen, audiences can easily conclude that the coin was switched even if the switch is done perfectly).
In dozens of performances of Side-Swiped (I'm going to the magic shop today to pick up another dozen refill), I've NEVER had anyone state that they think I switched cards or act in a way that suggests that the thought of a switch is on their minds. With most of the magic I perform, my goal is to end with the audience laughing and applauding. For me, Side-Swiped is not that kind of effect. Instead, the reaction is almost always stunned silence and a look of disbelief. The audience is stunned because they have absolutely NO pathway to the secret. |

I don't own the effect but when i saw aronson perform sideswiped mixed in with a few other effects, he had the spectator read some of the directions until almost the end when it came to the switch. I still don't even know how he switched it because i was watching it to the last second. And you also have to remember, the laymen might not think its so obvious even if you do.
