Ok..., so before the reviews here, a quick history....
I have always loved the Light/Heavy Chest Plot and I've owned a few different versions over the years and have always been disappointed with what I have received. They all seemed to be very poorly made and the photo's I saw always looked better than the actual product. So when I learned of Gimpy and his products I was skeptical...but thought I'd check one out to see what was up. I bought the Pirates Strong Box. To read my review of that, look here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 So after buying the Pirates Box, I mentioned to Gimpy that he might consider coming up with a "smaller version." He told me he was in the process of doing just that and he sent me the prototype to review. I gave him my thoughts and thus, the Mighty Mini was born as we now know it today. I have since acquired "The Mighty Mini" and the "Gimpy's New Light Heavy Chest (Antique Style). Here are my thoughts on each.... Gimpy's Light Heavy Chest - Wow! This thing is seriously intense. The perfect chest. The performer need not do a darn thing...the box does it all. No magnets, hookups, remotes, or anything! The magi never needs to touch the box. What can be said about this that hasn't already been said. The box is one of the best products I have ever seen in Magic...hands down, period! Absolutely beautiful. The chest is extremely well made, and uses an ingenious principle. There are very few things in the magic world that I would stick my seal of approval on. Gimpy is to the Light Heavy Chest as Owen is to Rings, as Sherwood is to Cups, or as Lassen is to Coins. If you don't own one yet...then stop what you're doing and buy one! Heck...buy 2 so you can perform it twice! It's well worth it. Have you ever just wondered what it would be like to be able to do real magic? If I were really able to make a coin vanish, I would simply snap and watch it vanish off the table. Why must I first pick it up and place it into my hand to cause it to disappear? If you were really wanting a L/H Box that was test condition fair, then this would be it. The audience can hold the box. The audience can look IN the box and even feel around inside as there is nothing to hide. The performer never touches the box. It's all done by the spectator. It's as fairer than fair. It's perfect! A beautiful piece of magic that will forever be in my show. The Mighty Mini - I was lucky enough to get the "prototype" version of The Mighty Mini Light Heavy Chest several months ago to play with and review so I feel as if the "official prop" I had something to do with. I made lots of suggestions and Gimpy followed each one to the exact tee to provide an awesome piece of magic. Basically...it's a smaller version of the Pirates Chest he sells...but the quality is much better in my opinion. The box is quite small and when you activate the gimmick, that little sucker ain't goin' nowhere! It's very deceptive due to the small size of the box. After sessioning on it with some friends of mine, I thought it would be an awesome idea to add breakaway handles to the box to add for some extra laughs. This idea was my own along with Bizzaro's in a creative session we had with the larger Pirates Chest that Gimpy also makes. We just thought it would be funny to instruct them to pick up the chest, gesture to the handle and have them break it off the box (held on with magnets). We were right! It kicks some serious tail! The cool thing is that the new pop off handles are strong enough to pick up the box from any handle and show that their a part of the box. The handles can support the weight of the box while the gimmick is not in use. So...if you're not wanting the Big Boy, then this light heavy chest is for you...it packs small and plays big! The only downside (if there must be one) is the audience cannot look at the inside. However...I have a "fix" for that problem. You can't show the inside empty...but you can show the inside full! Your audience will only remember that they did see inside it. I use a 4' Streamer Silk for the "heavy object to place inside" which does a great job of hiding the dirty work. It will fly by your audience. They'll swear they saw the inside. I have also discovered a method for showing the box all around on all sides. Gimpy asked me to shoot the "Official Demo" for the box, so keep your eyes opened and you can see my handling of the prop. I am able to show all sides (including the bottom) very fairly without exposing anything. A nice piece of work if I do say so myself. There will never be another chest that can come close to rivaling any of Gimpy's products. I hear that Robert Houdin has come back from the grave just to buy one of these chests. ALL of the Gimpy Products are as close to real magic as you can get! Now go forth...and ma-gish! Christopher

I am not familiar with light heavy chest concept. Can someone briefly describe the effect please?

The quicky readers digest version is, you invite someone on stage and introduce a handsome chest. It's lightweight and you ask if they're able to lift it. They do without any problems. You now inform them you are going to suck their strength from them. You do just that. You open the chest and place something heavy inside like a feather or a silk hanky. Close the chest and ask if they're now able to pick up the box. No matter how hard they try, they cannot get it to budge!!!!
Check out demos of this being done at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REBVPr5hzGQ.

Yes! The Gimmick is SUPER EASY to operate. A 5 year old could perform this and fry the minds of laymen.

I get a bunch of PM's on this - I find it very easy to set the gimmick right in front of the helper. It is a very natural movement and done with only one hand.

If ANYONE should be complimented here, it's GIMPY and not me. The reason I look so good performing is b/c of the design of his box. As you will see in The Official Demo that will be released SOON, the box can easily be "set" just inches in front of the spectator and they'll have no idea what's going on.
Kudo's to the Gimpster on this...it's one fine product that I'm proud to own!

OK based on all the feedback here I just placed a order for "Gimpy's Light Heavy Chest--Craftsman Style" should have it in time for my show next week. Gimpy did not have one in stock " a good sign that he is busy" but Steven's did. Thanks again

Please consider NOT doing this in you show next week.
Although easy to physically operate-- a good well thought out presentation, and a carefully practiced routine are what make the Magic! You may buy a BMW, but it will not drive itself. Do yourself and your audiences a huge favor, and work with the piece, get to know it, brainstorm on the best way to present, then after a month or so work it into your shows! You'll be happy you had the respect for the workmanship-- and your act. OK? Deal? Thanks, Walt |

I am so glad you got ahold of the box you were wanting and I am sorry you couldn't get one from my dad that met your schedule. My dad puts a lot of care into each box that he ships out and he wants to make sure each box is the best it can be(He is kind of a perfectionist). He definatly wants to produce quality not quantity. With that being said quality does take time but he is working as fast and as much as he can to get the boxes out. Thank you so much!
- Gimpys Daughter, BreAnne P.S. Christopher, Thanks for putting so much and time into preforming the mighty mini you do an awesome job!!

Stay tuned....
Gimpy is going to consider making me a special add-on for the smaller chests, and if it works out as a prototype, he might let the cat out'a the bag and make them for other clients, and boy would it help in some circumstances.... hmmmm, what could it be? Later, Walt |

Well...
Considering I just finished the final edit on the Offical Demo for the Mighty Mini for Murphy's Magic, I hope it's something that didn't need to go on the demo reel. YIKES!!!

Press Release from Stevens Magic Emporium (SME), in fairness to Steve Corbet (AKA Gimpy), SME does not have any remaining inventory of Gimpy's Light and Heavy Chests in stock at this time. We hope to have them by mid January 2009. Gimpy is working hard to keep up with the demand because this item truly is unique and we appreciate him allowing us to his distributor. Of the units we have sold to our clients - they have all been very satisfied and it is exactly the type of product we aspire to offer to our customers. Future orders of this product can be handled by either Gimpy or SME, as you prefer. Warm regards and happy holidays. Mark Stevens
