I've gotten into mentalism lately and I'm particularly interested in cold reading. I wan't to find a good book on the subject of cold reading only. I don't want a DVD or anything like that. I just want a book that gives a clear description of the subject with various methods of extracting information. All I know currently are the techniques listed in Corinda's "13 Steps to Mentalism." Any reccomendations?
"The person who says, 'I can' and the person who says 'I can't' are both right. Who do you want to be?"

Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

What has your experience been using what you learned from "13 Steps"?

You'll find a fairly comprehensive, annotated bibliography on the subject here.

The magic Café is a great resource- many threads and opinions on the subject. My personal favorite book is "The Dance" by Brad Henderson. It was out of print and only available used at auction- but has recently been reprinted in soft cover. Another one of my favorites is "Something for Nothing" by Angelo Stagnaro. I've read many others, but these two remain in my permenant library. I've just started reading The Dance again for the fourth time- its treatment of the subject is just great. Good luck on your search.

Look at Doug Dyment's website, he provided the link above. If you take the time to read through his annotations, you can find some amazing stuff. Specific to the original poster, I have two recommendations:
1.) Look to see what he has to say about Richard Webster and Ian Rowland. 2.) Play with the search function a whole lot more, there is lots of information in past threads that you are totally missing out on. I won't say anything more since those threads are there for you to read through. |

I'm often asked what I consider the best single book on cold reading. I don't think there is one single "best", so I usually respond that cold reading can be considered as a craft, as a science, and as an art.
For the craft, read Richard Webster's Quick and Effective Cold Reading. For the science, read Ian Rowland's Full Facts Book of Cold Reading. For the art, read Brad Henderson's The Dance.
