I am a geek.
With that out of the way, let's talk Thread. The effect: The performer takes out (or borrows) a spool of thread, tearing a length from it, about 24" long. The performer then begins feeding the thread into their mouth. The performer then reaches up to their eye with an empty hand, and begins to pull the thread out of the eye socket. The performer can stop, show it around with it still coming out of their eye, then pull it all the way through. The thread can be examined (though the spectators probably won't want to, it's wet!). Also included is the classic torn and restored Gypsy Thread. The methods: Two methods for performing the effect are explained on the DVD, the 'geek method' and the 'slight method. Both are pretty good, though I personally am partial to the geek method, as I think its much cleaner. As Wayne explains, the geek method is the one he uses, though it makes most people think he's crazy, so he developed the slight method too. Both methods are powerful and look very similar, a piece of thread gets pulled out of your eye. The geek method is cleaner and the slight method doesn't force you to report Mr. Houchin to an insane asylum. The production: Production values are very high. The one complaint I have is that they had two camera's on while he was talking most of the time, and the cuts between them happen much to regularly for it to not be annoying. But still, it's a minor complaint. Video and audio quality is completely amazing, I'm pretty sure it was shot in HD; the camera work is great for the closeups, staying so sharp you can count the lines on his fingers. The audio is also great, crystal clear and never a problem. Safety and Pain: As I look at what has been said about Thread on the Café, the two thing I have seen most people ask are: Is it safe? Is it painful/irritating? The answer is that the slight method is completely risk free and causes no problems or irritations. The geek method is also safe and non-harmful, if you follow the instructions exactly. There are two very important things you need to get ensure your eye's safety, both are easy to find at a pharmacy, but don't you dare try to perform the geek method without them. However, I have experienced no irritation or pain in using this, and Wayne said that he performed it three times a night for a week, and only experienced some minor redness, which went away in a couple of days. The Gypsy Thread: There really is no reason to use this with Thread, other than the fact that is uses a piece of thread to perform it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great trick, and I have no problems with it being included as a bonus effect, but it's not the reason to buy the DVD. Also, I bet many of you already know it. The Interview: Also included is an interview with Wayne that's about 25 minutes long. He talks about some interesting things on it, like his collaboration with Criss Angel and his history with Thread. The one problem with this section is that many clips from it were used in the earlier sections, so you see him saying many things you've already heard him say. Verdict on this section: thanks for including it, I didn't buy the video to see it. Also, let me say that I bought the download and he claims that there are some hidden things on the DVD that aren't in the download. Obviously I can't review them, but I don't think they'll ruin the whole thing. Cost: Thread costs $25 for the DVD or the download, or $30 for the combo at http://www.waynehouchin.com. Wayne says that the price will be about $5 higher in other places, but as of now it is only available through him. Final Verdict: 9/10. Thread is great for freaking out an audience in a small or large environment (if staged right), but setup makes it not very valid for walk-around or restaurant. It causes incredible reactions, but don't do it for people who have just eaten. Overall, a powerful piece of 'geek' magic, that I think many people will enjoy. Good luck to everyone, and good luck to you too Wayne. Thank you so much for giving us this amazing piece of magic Cheers Daniel |

Great review!
I got this yesterday and I think its a really great effect, its very very practical and easy to performe in the real world. I like the sleight method more then the geek method because I think its more practical to performe on the fly and its not much less vissual. |

Thanks daffelglass.
Does the video go over the time frame, from set up to performance in the geek version? Would being set up thirty minutes before performance of the geek version be a problem and does he cover this on the DVD? |
