Fourteen years in the making, $13 million dollars, 14 tracks recorded in 14 studios with perhaps the largest collection of musicians ever assembled for a rock-n-roll band (at one point, 5 guitarists are playing on one track). Now streaming for free on the band's official MySpace page:
http://www.myspace.com/gunsnroses I wasn't expecting much ... but it has far exceeded my expectations. Axle Rose has once again put out a series of songs that simply cannot be understood with a single listen, songs that grow new meaning with each play. Its like after you hear it a few times, you realize your first judgment may have been too harsh. The kind of music that just grows on you like with Use Your Illusion. I'd say roughly 90% of music is a typical he/she love/hate story of either a relationship/breakup. Once again, Axle Rose breaks the mold and actually brings meaning to music. Two thumbs up. -JoeJoe

By the way... they released it on Vinyl too for your old school record players. I really wish they released a cassette too, I still got a working cassette player in my car but its really hard to find cassettes now-a-days.

Now that is some good old G&R. I went to a pub on Friday (which happens fairly often) and they had alive band (which never happens) and they played tons of Queen and Guns and Roses. Loved it.

Back in March, Dr. Pepper, who had been sponsoring some of Guns N' Roses' tours, expressed doubts that Chinese Democracy would be released in 2008. They even went so far as to say, "If it's released in 2008, we'll give everyone a free Dr. Pepper."
Looking at the ol' calendar, I notice that the album is out, and it is still 2008. Enjoy your free Dr. Pepper! Quote:

Thank you Cardone....AC/DC has a special place in my heart, I even accept Brian Johnson now. I saw Guns and Roses in LA and it was like watching a train wreck. So much talent in one band and they just didn't play nice together, I hope with age they have learned to deal with themselves. Great band though.

I love AC/DC and everything, but lets be honest ... every song they've ever written sounds like every other song they've ever written.

Yeah...they took formula rock and made it work! I think because AC/DC did the soundtrack of my late teens they mean so much to me. When I look at those times I hear them, Meatloaf, Tom Petty, and Styx in my head. I'd still rather listen to those four than anyone else.

Not to bad so far, but it aint no "appetite"... For a while they had a guitarist named buckhead (apparently very good), so named because he wore a bucket of KFC on his head...

I don't think many GNR fans expected it to be another Appetite, especially since Axle has been telling us for years that it wasn't going to be another Appetite. Not even the original line-up could put out another Appetite, as Use Your Illusion is no Appetite either.
My only disappointment is that it is not complete - there are "missing" tracks. I have heard at least one leaked song that is not here, and then there was "Oh My God" that was supposed to be here. Sebastian Bach has said that Chinese Democracy was to be three albums, so I'm starting to think that this is just the beginning - that Axle isn't done yet. -JoeJoe

Actually this album is part of a trilogy. However, the second album is probably scheduled to come out in 2023.
Axl is probably testing the waters with this one. Dre |

I doubt it will take that long. This album was ready to be released over two years ago, but it was the record company that delayed it - not Axle Rose. Their reason was the fact that so much music was being pirated online that they were afraid they wouldn't recoup all the money they spent making it ($13 million if you believe the hype).
I actually see this album as a major turning point for record labels: not only is this entire album is being streamed legally online, so is every other GNR record! Suddenly a record company gets it - if you want people to buy music, you must let them hear it. Thus, the entire GNR catalog is being made available for free ... setting new records at MySpace with over 25 listens per second. And if anyone knows how to sell an album it is Axle Rose - this thing is going to be sitting on the checkout counter at every Best Buy in America during the busiest season of the year. I have no doubts of it's commercial success. My biggest question is what will be it's long-term impact in/on China? -JoeJoe

It had 12 out of 12 superb tracks. Chinese Democracy, IMHO, has 11 great tracks out of 14. The other 3 are not my cup of tea. But 11/14 is a good score As for the remark that No Slash = No GnR ... I think most people who follow the bad realize that Axl and Axl alone = GnR. The rest of the band were always just adjuncts.

C'mon, man - bands are pretty much always a symbiosis of creative talents. Maybe Axl was your fav, but there's no getting around the fact that a different lineup never would have made Appetite. I'm a huge Beatles fan, but the whole "was it Lennon or McCartney?" debate can be answered by the fact that everything they did subsequently on their own was mediocre at best. Sometimes you just have to mix the chemicals to get the reaction. Same with Van Halen/Roth.
