In the hands of a pro, this is such a spectacular sight. However, I bought one, realized quickly that the prep time was more than my patience level, and I sold it. What do people think? I suspect there are a lot of silk workers who have "gone through" silk fountains. Am I right, or too impatient?

You are going to wish you never sold that silk fountain.
The end result is well worth the set up time. |

You gave up too soon! The preparation time drops as soon as you have done it a few times. You learn that it does not have to be precise. It takes me less than a minute to set an 18-silk, silk fountain. I include several free silks that are allowed to drop from the fountain, and load glitter and/or confetti in venues where allowed. In all it is no big deal to quickly fold a silk fountain.
Then you can get General Grant’s version. There is no folding. Grab the silks and put into the holder. His takes about five seconds to have completed and ready to use. It is the fountain of choice for me when I’m on stage. In a parlor or church basement or small club venue I’ll use my old homemade set-up. The silk fountain is one of those tricks that many magicians discount but garners a good response from an audience of non-magicians.

I also am a big fan of the silk fountain and would agree with the others that you gave up too soon.
Our silk fountain to dove allows us to load a dove or a long silk streamer or a deck of cards or a can of soda etc... Because of the way it is made, we can fold it at home and then load it during the show with a small shoe we borrow from a kid in the audience. Make the shoe vanish and then reproduce it from the centre of a silk fountain. Gets a great response. |

Every Famiy Show I do has one, a big one that takes a long time to fold. But it's worth every minute! Don't sell it. It becomes like a meditation for getting ready for a show.

I would agree that the prep time is less as you get into it. Also the number of silks is important. I only use 14 silks. That is sufficient to get the effect.

Magic is visual. Silk fountains give you about every visual benefit possible: color, graceful flow, surprise, anticipation and unusual experience. They do it cheaply, reliably, and conveniently. They pack small and don’t have to be fed! They are effective "eye candy".
Preparation is simply an investment in a professional show. I hope you reconsider this decision. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

David, yes I load them so the drop from the fountain. They are folded so the blossom open and then fall away. They are loaded just a little off center. I slight tilt and gentle shake will do the job..

I use my silk fountain in almost every show. It takes a little prep, but it gets a GREAT response. The evening before the show I sit and fold it while watching TV. If I did one or two shows every day like some of you guys, I would probably take it out of my show.

Jim,
Same here. I use it in almost every show I do. The only time I don't use it is in a nightclub or supperclub setting. It is in my stand up stage show, birthday parties, adult banquets, and family shows. It always gets an aahhh response. David |

I like one in each hand --- folding time is best spent in front of TV with a good documentary.

A silk fountain to dove is constructed to have a load, at least as large as a dove. It is also made so that the fountain can be folded and the load added later. The load is also always under your control the whole time, so there is no worrying that it may fall out of the fountain at any time.

Vick .. Make your own ... It's not hard and the size of the fountain and the load chamber will be up to you ....
Duane Laflin has a DVD on this subject. I have been using one I made for about 10 years . It is very easy and much cheaper. |

I agree that it is better to make your own in order to fit your personal "specs" and preferences. Silks are just so beautiful that even though I don't perform as much of it as I probably should, silk fountains really pack a punch for laypeople. I remember seeing my first one and it was flat out amazing.

Wow thank you very much!!!!
I'm all ears (and eyes) to any more information One of the things I've read and heard was it's a lot of folding and time but it goes quicker as you get more adept with it

The tea cup, obviously, should be a misdirection for bringing in the fountain.

Vick,
Combined with a table steal, I get two glasses of wine and then a can of V-8. (I could have had a V-8!) But a cup of tea has a lot more class. I like it! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
