After reading the thread on the Wal-mart incident where someone mentioned the crazed over spending that most people engage in at this time of year - most of it on credit cards - I wondered if there were any fellow Dave Ramsey followers here on the Café?
My wife and I just recently completed his "Financial Peace University" and are on our way to becoming debt free. Anyone? Lyndel |

Dave Ramsey style economics needs to be taught to children. Though I hate to be the one to break it to you Lyndel, congress is killing the dream of being debt free.

Congratulations on working towards being debt free.
I haven't heard of Dave Ramsey before, but we have been living these principles for our entire married life. Almost anyone needs some form of debt when they are just starting out - but education, basic transportation, and housing are about the only things worth going into debt for. Once you start to get established, then getting out and remaining out of debt should be a primary goal. We are at the point now where the only remaining debt is our house, and that will be paid off within 5 years. It has taken some sacrifices, but being free of debt is worth it. Well said! The problem is it is so tempting to over spend, especially when credit is so easily obtained. If lenders would not give out credit so easily, maybe the economy wouldn't be in the shape its in.

Thanks Slartibartfast. But even basic transportation doesn't have to be a debt burden.
In Ramsey's course, he even shows you how to drive a brand new vehicle every four-five years - WITH NO MONTHLY CAR PAYMENTS! I had an agent friend of mine send out a mass e-mail to all of his talent about a year and a half ago stating he was going out of business and retiring. Oh, did I mention he's only 40 years old? We are pretty good friends so I called him up to ask him what the deal was with that e-mail he had sent out. Turns out he moved from Florida to Tennessee, bought a farm with horses, cows, etc., and is happy as can be! He say's it's what he pictured as the perfect environment to raise his 3 kids! I jokingly asked him if he had won the lottery and just not told me about it... Then he told me that one of the best things he and his wife had ever done was to go through Ramsey's Financial Peace University. I wasn't familiar with it, but I was quick to self educate myself about it because I wanted what my agent friend has - FINANCIAL PEACE! Turned out they had a class starting the very next week in my town so the wife and I signed up and went through the entire course - IT'S FREE by the way! It's a great program that doesn't offer pie in the sky promises and is definitely not a "get rich quick" scheme, but rather, simple common sense principles that we have began to apply. It does require some discipline, but the end result of being completely debt free is well worthwhile in my book! We have already freed up over $14,000.00 per year we had going out on unnecessary expenditures (what I like to call a cash hemorrhage)and have already paid off two of our credit cards. It's actually pretty exciting to be heading toward financial independence - especially in the current economy! Lyndel |

Kregg,
I'm very disappointed you missed 'Look after the cents and the dollars will look after themselves.' That's my favourite. This is a great thread by the way. It's a great joy to finally obtain something you've saved for - as opposed to the great worry credit imposes. Destiny |

Dave Ramsey is awesome! I have 6 of his "Total Money Makeover" books under my desk to give to family for Christmas. That will make 20 that I have given to people. My wife and I were blessed to start our marriage off 6 years ago by getting on a budget and not going in debt. We lived in a used mobile home for 3 years and paid it off after the second year, we have always paid cash for a used car, and during those 3 years we were able to save up a year's salary worth of savings.
So, when we moved to our house, we were able to pay a good downpayment, pay off her med school bills immediately with cash, and have absolutely no debt except the house payment, which will be paid off in 2-3 years from now. If I had heard of Dave Ramsey a year earlier, we wouldn't even have a house payment - but it will be gone soon. Being debt free is a great feeling! And all that was done on a teacher's salary while my wife was in school and prior to me going into my magic full-time. Everyone who is tired of always being sick and tired of debt should get Dave's book! Congrats Lyndel for changing your family tree! Chad |

My brother took me to one of his rallies, and recently to one of his financial counselors. I talked to some friends at work who attended FPU, and they are just full of joy at their new found hope and debt free lifestyle. there is a new light in their eyes. It is WORKING for them! The counselor I mentioned gave me a free copy of Dave's book "Total Money Makeover", and I am on my way to rebuilding my finances from the ground up. I am aiming for that $1000.00 emergency fund, and I am hoping I am not too late to kick out Mr Murphy, because my factory may lay off. I wish with all my heart I had heard of Dave years ago, for I would not be in the jam I am now in. Dave's just unparalleled when it comes to great, common sense instruction that really, really works in the REAL WORLD.

Step one: Don't marry a woman with tens of thousands of dollars worth of credit card debt.
Step Two: Don't pay off tens of thousands of dollars worth of credit card debt then let the woman KEEP the cards. Step three: Pay off the new tens of thousands in debt and then cancel all the accounts. Step four: Tell said women to 'shut the #@#)$ up' when she screams she isn't at fault for the tens of thousands in debt while her entire family had her pay for vacations and groceries for years. |
