I think the lesson to be learned here is, if a trick can end fatal don't do it! We all make mistakes at some points in our career, even the best mess up. I have seen this trick go wrong numerous times! And I sure wouldn't risk my hand on that effect. I mean sure it plays big but so do a lot of other tricks that don't go horribly wrong.

The risk if you make a mistake with cards or ropes, is diferent with the risk if you make a mistake with that spike...

So the fix to the problem is DO NOT make a mistake! Problem solved! If you know your props and how they work then you are not at risk!

Man. I do this effect, and it still freaks me out every time I do it because of that chance it will go wrong and really mess up my career.

Brian put this out as a joke! It's fake...you can tell it is. TRUST ME!!! Brian's version is totally foolproof with NO CHANCE of him ever messing up.

Years ago, there was a fellow in my city that was using a faulty finger chopper (I won't say the make) on a lady subject. Cut her finger badly. It's bad enough when you do it to yourself, but far worse when you hurt someone else. I rather doubt if this lady will ever trust herself in the hands of a magician.

I'm too lazy to search for it right now, but on YouTube, there's a clip of a magi using a women's hand to smash the cups, and he screws up and impales her hand with the spike.
I'm guessing the Magician got sued for that one!

I don't know how this trick works, but I would think that if you are not 100% sure where a spike is, you might not want to slam your or anyone's hand down onto it. That said, it looks like an awesome effect when it's done right, so I can see having it in your act.

There are several different methods of doing this (and a few methods I'm sure exist that I don't know about).
Brian Brushwood's is the safest method...(even with his gag joke above of him messing up). It's not really a "magic trick" the way he does it...it's more of a performance piece. No audience member is ever brought up on stage...his music starts, and he pulls out the lazy Susan, loads the knife, the cups, gives it a spin...and ta da! There is NEVER any question as to where the knife is in his routine. The next method is the method I use...it's about 99.9% safe. In my opinion, I would say it's 100% safe, except I know a few people who have injured themselves on the spike while doing it...but once you hear how they screwed it up, you would quickly learn why that is NOT an issue with 99.9% of magicians performing the effect. The other method that is most commonly used is the method used in all these YouTube Videos where you see the person screw it up. It's only about 80% safe, and if something happens "during" the mix up of the cups, then you're doomed for failure. Like I said above...if anyone is interested in doing the BEST roulette routine around, you should contact Randi Rain, and she'll make you a beautiful set. It uses a rusty spike about 5" to 6" long and 4 wooden disks that she has painted to match the rust of the spike. It's very cool! Contact her and say you want to buy Tetanus! It's less than $100, I think, and you won't be disappointed!

Just do Shattered. 100% safe, can never screw up.
It is the same effect as far as the audience members are concerned. |

No, in Europe they don't sue in the same way as America. |
