Nice find. I've seen the show live twice, but I never get tired of Ricky Jay.

He's from Brooklyn, not New Jersey. Either way, he's the best there is.

No! That isn't possible. Why, just the other day I was set straight by people here that Ricky Jay is an illusionist and escape artist and not a card guy! Why would they make it look like he did a card show? NOOOO!

Actually I said close up guy which Ricky Jay is known for in magic. Most serious magicians study other aspects of the art and unless you can provide information as to Ricky performing an illusion or escape show then I stand that he is a close up guy. I also commented as to my expectations of the 'he does other magic' crowd to start their nonsense, thank you for playing along. I eagerly await your information showing that Ricky Jay is equally known as a performer of illusions and escapes.

I don't know how many illusions Ricky Jay has ever performed on stage, but I believe he is a consultant on / designer of illusions / escapes. For example, as in movies like Forest Gump, The Prestige, The Illusionist, The Escape Artist. He's also lectured on illusions (e.g. at the International Design Conference in Aspen).
http://rickyjay.com/bio.html I agree, he is more of a close-up guy but I believe he knows / can do much more than just that.

The question isn't about consulting, the question is if Ricky Jay the magician is 'known' as a close up guy. He is also an actor but that doesn't come into play. To me it is like saying 'Slash is a great guitarist' and people, in order to just be a pain, say "no, he is more than that, he can play a gazoo and one of those plastic flute thingies". Doesn't take away the simple fact that Slash is a great guitarist, is known as a guitarist, and will go down as one of the greats with a guitar...the gazoo means nothing. Anyone out there know of Ricky performing as an illusionist or escape artist which has elevated him to the general public that has heard of him above that of close up performer? I have never stated or implied that Ricky Jay, as serious a student and practitioner of magic as you'll find, doesn't know or can do more than shuffle a deck of cards.
See, the beauty of me is I can fully admit if I change my position on something the mear stating of the obscure doesn't cut it with me. Bitterman, I stand ready to change my stand once you have provided facts as to Ricky being a performing illusionist and escapist of note. |

I believe, MagicSanta, this all came about because you question why Ricky Jay would be the consultant for a Broadway show about Houdini when, in your words, he was a ‘close-up guy’. Myself and others tried to enlighten you to the fact that, while in your limited experience you’ve only seen him as a close-up guy, he is a very versatile, talented and experienced man and a fount of knowledge that would be of great help to anyone producing a show about Houdini or, even; watermelons
Now, buffeted by the mendacity of ignorance, you’ve changed your contention. The question had been about consulting but now the focus has moved to the quality of public education in Northern Nevada.

You, Bitterman, are full of it. I have stated and re state that Ricky Jay is a close up performer and never have I stated that he was ignorant of other aspects of the art. You seem, as I predicted in my post would happen, to be completely in need of 'defending' Ricky when no defense is required. His having knowledge of other aspects does not take away from his being primarily a close up worker and you have nothing to back you other than BS. I would say Rickys acting experience in concert this his magic background is what the foundation of his consulting business is built upon. In other words if someone in that business is looking for a 'magic consultant' the name Ricky Jay will come up but this does not mean he, Ricky, is an experienced performer in all aspects which he consults in. Do you believe one who consults on a movie that takes place in the middle ages actually lived in the middle ages? Until you can come up with something else then I guess saying Ricky Jay is a close up guy when the context is performing magic stands.
You question the quality of public education in Northern Nevada. Before making such statements you may want to be aware that I attended public and private schools in Georgia and California and attended the University of Georgia, I did do some course work at University of Nevada Reno though. I've never attended public school in Nevada, nice try though. Wait, I have seen public schools here so perhaps in your world that would be equal to attending. |
