Not sure if this is where this should be posted but I will go at it anyway. I have a prop, the snake can. It is the bigger one I picked up at my local magic shop that looks like a can of potato chips. Does anybody use this prop? I am having a little problem and want to see if I could get some help. Thanks for your halp.
Thanks Steven |

Let me guess. Sometimes, when you open the can, the snake refuses to budge. Is that it?

No, I think it is that the springs have burst through the cheap plasticy outer snake shell. Right?

None of those really. I was not thinking when I purchased and stored this effect. I left the snales in the can and one night I was sitting in my room watching tv when all odf a sudden the top popped off and the snakes shot out. Well after I regained my composure I found out that the lid has become lose and it will not stay on very long with out it popping off. I say that to ask, is there any way I can make the lid fit any better or tighten up the can itself? I hope this makies sense. They are not that expensive to buy another but just wondered if this one can be salvaged. The lid does fit on it snuggly but it does pop off after about an hour or so.
Thanks Steven |

Drill two small holes opposite one another through the top of the can, just below the lid. Straighten half of a large paper clip just enough to poke through both holes leaving a curled "handle." When the can is not being used, remove the snakes. When it is packed or being transported, insert the pin to keep the snakes "under control." Just before using, hold the top and pull the pin. The small holes will never be noticed.
I recovered my snakes with a softer cloth matching my show colors. I also replaced the cheesy can with a regular Pringles can to make things a little less obvious. If the lid becomes too loose, I simply buy another can of Pringles and replace the plastic lid.

Steve,
Line the top of the INNER snake can with duct tape. This will build it up and make the cap tighter. It works great.

Both good ideas here. Skip I was thinking about the Pringles can but worried about the whole "product placement not giving royalties" thing. I did want to replace the cover on them also because the originals are just really cheap material. Seems to me that the Pringles lids just don't fit very tightly. Have you ever had a premasture snake escape?
Tommy, that is a good idea I never thougt of. I guess I was trying to over fix it. Thanks Steven |

The top popping off uncontrollably was going to be my next guess, and yes - duct tape can fix anything!

And what's more natural than something from their own pantry?

Er, aren't these things REALLY cheap? Here in the UK, they cost just £2 from Hawkin's Bazaar. I'd never even consider repairing such a cheap prop!
By the way, David Ginn has a fantastic routine called "The Snake Can". He can also supply "professional" snake cans (at a much higher price). The snakes are huge, and are cloth-covered. :) |

A local joke shop stopped selling the plastic covered ones after a spring in the eye incident which would make me settle for the cloth covered ones everytime...if I used them.
One of my friends actually tried to trick me with the nut can version recently..do they know me at all? |

Every so often I would come across someone that knew the snakes in the can gag. I now have them in a powder kool aid container that has a screw on lid. New I never have to worry about the snakes popping the lid off or someone who's wise to the prop.

I had the same problem with the lid coming off too easily. I just put some clear "scotch" tape around the top of the can to widen it slightly, and causes the lid to fit snugly. On a side note, the kids can see the tape, which makes them suspicious that there aren't any chips inside, which is exactly what I want.
Potty - do you have a link for Derek's stuff? |

Speaking of Snake Cans, I recently heard about a "delayed" snake can, where the snake pops out a couple of seconds after the top is opened. Anyone tried one of these? They sound fun.

Another favourite of mine is the "Wand to Snake". Brilliant. :) |

I have had the delayed snake can. There is a release in the bottom of the can that lets the snakes go. You have to be holding the can. It is not a delay or timer like some of us magicians hoped for. Now Warren Stephens could have solved that problem in seconds. He did put out his wand inflator that was a snake can that had a little plastic tube on the top. You opened the can and took out a little magic wand about 4 inches long. You could open and close the can and then you put the little wand inside, put the top on and started blowing into the can to inflate it but you didn't notice that the tube had come off and you were just blowing into the air. You repaired the tube, blew up the wand and when you opened the can a 5 foot spring snake jumps out. It used a release in the bottom of the can and the spring wand was beautifully made. I have one in my collection.

I agree with the "make it look like anything but a prop". I think I am going to use the pringles thing. Or maybe the lay's stax. I eat way to many of them and have a few.....hundred cans laying around. I have a problem. I need help from CA....No not Cris Angel...CA= Chips Anonymous!
I under stand the prop is very inexpensive but just didn't want to have to replace it that often. By the way, thanks all for your help with this. Steven |
