Maybe I missed it, but I've never seen any discussion about the impact of the new American coins that are now in circulation. I've found a couple nice routines that would be more effective to borrow a quarter and then switch another in. Well, what if your coin doesn't match the borrowed coin? Not just in quality, but as a state coin? Now, nickels are different as well. (Dollar bills too, but I don't use them myself.)
How have people handled these kinds of differences? |

NEVER had this problem. lol If you are asking somebody to borrow a quarter, they are just going to pull it out and hand it to you. They will know by touch it is a quarter and give it to you right away. You can just miscall it, too. Jay Sankey goes into this subject often in a few of his DVDs, like Sankey Live, Sankey's Greatest Hits, etc. LOTS of material on this subject out there. I never do magic with nickels, nor is it as efficient, so I don't think we should worry too much about that. I have never even seen a different dollar bill, either. But with that, there is ALWAYS that slim chance of getting caught with the serial number. Rich Ferguson did an awesome torn and restored bill on TV where the same serial number was on the bill beginning and end and borrowed.

Actually, I have encountered this... they looked at the back of the gimmick coin and said, "That's not mine."
The key is to get them to give it to you without inspecting it... the use of misdirection while getting them to pull out a coin is needed. Somehow, work an attention drawing aspect into the point where they go for the coin so they do as Mark Tirone mentions - and just hand it to you by feel. When gimmicks do not match the real item, you will ALWAYS have a chance of being called out.

Obviously, cig through quarter is relevant to this discussion. When I do this, I am sure to ask for one of the "old quarters," because I want to show them the difference in metal quality between the old and new, and WHY they decided to change the design. It gives me a reason to ask for the old quarter, and I don't have to worry about coins that don't match. Just ask for what you need, and develop a REASON for needing it.

If matching the borrowed quarter exactly is a stumbling block:
You can always switch their (new) quarter with one that matches your gimmicked cig through quarter; then ditch the original quarter when you go into your pocket for the cig, pencil or whatever. Of course, you'll be giving them the switched-in quarter back to keep, so you'll want to keep a bunch of the matching quarters on hand... Julie |

Sounds like a nice gambit, Corbett.
