You might want to try the Imperceptible Shuttle in the S.V.C.A. segment of Mirage Et Trois, used to get the second coin across under the motivation of showing the remaining coins to your spectator. It may be just what you were looking for, and it's a dead easy move to execute.

It is Chris Korn, and you can see the move in one of his Extreme Korn DVDs; he actually has to show the coin in an open palm before he does the ROPS move his way, so in this case, it may not work for you; also, the way he does it, I found it hard to do the move with more than one coin. That is why I came up with my own way of doing it, which can be also done at sternum level. Have fun searching. |

Thanks, Eric! I have had my eye on Mirage Et Trois since I heard about it. I put it on my Christmas list, so hopefully I'll get it, but if not, I will still buy it.

Mark,
The problem is a common one. You have a ton of advanced material there, but haven't mastered the beginning stuff. If you haven't LEARNED the stuff in Bobo's (one post says you don't have it, one says you do), how can you create your own routine? This is a common beginner's mistake, brought on by reading advice on boards like this one from people who shouldn't be offering advice. When people tell you to make up a routine that fits your personality, they don't mean buy a bunch of stuff and mix up parts of it. They mean LEARN to DO the stuff that came before you, and if it doesn't fit you AFTER YOU HAVE LEARNED IT, then try to create something different. If you haven't studied Bobo's, you are nowhere near ready for Kurtz or Harbottle. |

Wsduncan... I must disagree with you in some parts. I know lots of people who never bought a copy of Bobo's and still master Kurtz and Harbottle's stuff better than many of the people who've bought a copy of Bobo's. Now, of course, this depends on the person, but you don't need to have a copy of Bobo's to be successful in more advanced material. Now, of course, it'll help you to master the more advanced material.

Hi Rutabaga,
Nice to see you, man. I wish all is well with you. I really do not want to elaborate. It will take me to much time to write it down, but I say one thing. I have the book and just leafed through it, and that was right at the very beginning when I got into magic. The only thing I learned from Bobo's was the Downs palm and back thumb palm. I never read any of the routines in it, and I can honestly say that I have a lot of original routines, and I believe Mark can do the exact same thing without reading Bobo's. I got nothing against Bobo's book. I just wanted and like to do things my way and come up with my own stuff as much as I could. I had a dream. Then again, that is just me. Every Head is a world. peace. |

Bobo's has a lot of good stuff, but much of it has to be reworked a bit to work today. However, there was coin magic before Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, and a person can certainly learn coin magic without it.....if he chooses to.

I think the main gist of what wsduncan is saying is that it's good to learn to walk before you start to run. You don't necessarily need to learn every routine in Bobo's, but it is a good lesson in coin magic, and there is a lot of good, basic stuff in there. You just have to read through it to find it. It will make all the other magic that is out there make more sense.
I think if you talk to ANY of the magicians out there who work professionally, they will say that they started with Bobo, and expanded. Harbottle didn't do that stuff before he learned his basic magic, and then learned David's stuff. He expanded upon it, but already had a good base upon which to build. Myself, Roth, the late Latta, Gallo, Schneider, Kam, Harbottle, Neighbors, among many others will tell you that they started with Bobo. Now for the Three Fly routine, there are MANY, MANY versions out there. Dan Watkins, in the past, has made a partial listing of the routines that were in print at that time (circa 2004), and there are a lot of variations and a lot of similarities. Before publishing a "new" routine, make sure your ideas weren't already done. You may find that by studying the published routines, you may hit upon an idea that will fit your own routine. Something either used by others, or something new. There is nothing wrong with incorporating a move or sequence from another routine to help your own, as long as you give it proper credit. Anyway, I hope this post helped.

Glad you mentioned this, Platt. Your work should be checked out by all, especially as to your methods with the "Fanning Pitch." That thing is deadly.
I have my own way of trafficking coins right out front, called the "Quick Pitch," that I use a lot in my work, and it is very effective and also slickly undetectable. I think it also would work well in this transfer.

I never suggested that the material in Bobo's was all good, or even worth doing. But Bobo's or a couple of other basic texts are necessary to learn the basics. What I learned from Bobo's was largely what NOT to do. But I also learned what had gone before me so I escaped the embarrassment of being considered a “thief” when I “invented” someone else’s material. And by learning what didn’t work for me, I was able to develop material that did, and managed to create stuff that garnered praise from folks like Paul Choose, Curtis Kam and Geoff Latta.
I can’t tell you how many students I’ve seen over the years who don’t bother learning the craft before they start inventing their “own” methods. In almost every case (that I’ve seen) what they invent is poorly thought out, and badly constructed. I suppose it’s possible to be so very creative that you can actually come up with honest-to-goodness new methods that are also worth creating, but in a quarter of a century of doing coin magic, I haven’t seen it happen from someone who hadn’t studied the basics. I’ve also see actors who think they’re “naturally gifted” and don’t need to study their craft. Generally speaking, they should have. Your mileage may vary... |

Wsduncan,
you just wrote it, they are a bunch of basic texts to learn the basics from,it just does not have to be Bobo's as you stated earlier. Hey Michael, So what about if one can not read in english? how can someone study Bobo's or any of the other texts? I do not see any spanish test for basic coin magic or they are hard to find. I guess a good answer could be: Just buy the DVDs that came out last year with the whole content out of Bobo's. Or what about if you hate following magic instrutions?,that would be Me. I personally started with David Stone's VHS and Jump straight to Gary Kurtz's VHS and developed my own style. I am in anyway gifted, gifted to me means hard work and that is what I love to do when I want to be good and excel at something and coin magic is the something. Everything is relative. Peace. P.S. Hey Mark, I'm sorry for going a bit off topic..my bad. |

Hehe. It's fine Mano I have been gone for a qhile so lets see if I can catch up on all this.
wsduncin, I do not own the BOOK by Bobo, But if you conisder I have many videos and other books on magic, I might even have the entire book in incriments. That was confusing so what I am trying to say is that I have all of Jay Sankey's videos and books. On a lot of them he teaches coin magic and often refers to the sleights used in Bobo's. Almost half of REV. Coin magic and 2.0 are Bobo's. So I have collected enough knowledge via other books as well as videos to know a great deal about coin magic already. PLUS, I often expend other sleights to fit me. I might even be getting Bobo's since there was a bag on the floor a few days ago with it sticking half way out lol. I also see ABSOLUTELY no problem with taking other tricks and mixing them up to work for me. I might take some of Bobo's and some of Eric Jone's and some of Roth's and Boykin's and Rubinstein's. For all I know I might not use any of anybodies and stick to what I have. I also have a lot of Kainoa's coin magic publications and I have mastered a great deal of them so I would not consider myself a beginner since much of it is advanced stuff. Michael Rubinstein, I don't know if I follow you hear, But I was not intending on publishing my work on this. Reason being, I might be using incriments of other effects and sleights that may be copywrited, Plus, What I have now looks an awful lot like SpeedFly and some of it looks like Mirage Et Trois, Which inspired this essentially. But if I come to an earth shattering sleight or presentation or handling for it, I may tip some of it in my future books or videos if any of that pulls through Marion, I believe I have seen what you are reffering to. Is this from the Marion Boykin coins across (please correct me if that is the wrong name) that you published in "Short Pockets"? I saw that and was quite impressed by it. Looks like a few of the moves that I do in my day to day life when I'm practicing or performing in school or something. But was that meant fot you to throw a coin into the hand and have it come back with another coin? -Mark Tirone |

No Mark, I do not use the QP in my "KrazyKoinZ Across" effect in Short Pockets. But that is also a very slick move in itself attributed to Dan Sylvester. I use the QP in other Crimp Change related effects, and I think I do go over it as well in Short Pockets in another effect there.

Awesome! Thanks. The Danny Sylvester move is a really good one. I kind of make a move similar to that and one of RUbinstein's sleights called "ROPS" I believe it is called. A combination of the two and I think I might have my ending. I will still check out some of the stuff you guys suggested to me though. Thanks!
