Thanks Sam for doing that. You beat me to the punch as I was so busy at work and with shows I just now got a chance to check back in here. Thanks for doing that.

Steve: Did you get everything that you need? Do you need anything else? If so, let me know and I can work with you on getting that to you and making this happen.

I thank you again for everything you are doing for us and I think this will be a valuable new area of the Café.

I hope this opens up soon. I already have ideas for quite a few posts to make in there to get things started. Some are of advice, stories and some questions for us to come together and find solutions for.

Exactly! I know Sam and I also have very similar ideas and things we also want to post and get started on. I am very excited about this and think it should be a great way to both communicate, educate and empower others.

I am also working on ways and ideas to get the word out to other deaf magicians and HH entertainers to let them know there is a home for us here to come together, post information and share thoughts.

I too agree it gong to be wonderful.

Hey Kyle I have a list of contacts and will be getting a list of all deaf and Hh magicians to send an e-mail to them about the new Café spot.
maybe you and I can write a small blurb about our ideas and then I can send it out to them.

either way I can not wait for this to get going.

I do have a question already open to anyone.

Maybe Ron would already ahve an idea.
my current challange is hearing my music or I should say performingto music and not able to hear my cues. I have come up with an idea or two and they seem to work. Any thoughts and ideas as to how I can know where I am in my music when I can not hear it. I know Bramma used lights as cues but I do not always have my whole team with me.

so let this be the first thread question. Following you music when you can not hear it?

thanks everyone

Music is a tough one. First the selection of music is quite a challenge but that's another discussion. I'll share a few things I've personally done when it comes to timing my act to the music and I'll also share some ideas I've thought of but haven't yet tried out.

I used a karaoke track and a small monitor. I had this small TV screen in position so that I could peak at it from time to time and see the words of the song on the screen. This is of course assuming that A) The song has words. B) you know the song and C) it's a song you can find a karaoke track to. Lately I've been very involved in subtitles for videos so there may be more ways to make use of this small monitor method soon. I'll play around with that.

A kind of funny story about the above karaoke method. One time the monitor wouldn't work. The solution was that my girlfriend at the time was side stage and she was singing with the music. Not out loud but I could see her and see what she was singing by lip reading. It wasn't the best solution but it worked.

I've also hooked LED lights to speakers before. So you can see the music. Watch this video to see how the light can be hooked up to a speaker.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTNcV4FzE8o

Another suggestion is to pick up a watch for the deaf. The kind with a vibrating alarm. You can set the alarm to let you know when the song ends. But that's just to to tell you the song is over. So it's only useful to let you know when for example song one is over and song two is starting.

I picked up something called The Invisible Clock. You can set the alarm to go off in any interval you want. For example it can go off every hour, minute or so many seconds. Or lets say your first song is 2:30, the second is 4:20 and the third song is 3:25 seconds long. You can set the invisible clock to let you know when each of these songs are over. You just have the clock in your pocket and you'll feel the vibrate alarm go off.

On a side note I do have an idea for a device that could help us. Here's what I'm thinking. Have some device on you with a microphone that'll pick up the music. When it picks up sound is causes something you wear on your to vibrate to the music. The louder the sound the stronger the vibration. So we'd be able feel the music but it won't make to much noise. That's the idea anyway.

Well, that's a few suggestions and ideas. I'm sure more will come later.

Hey ron,

vibrating suit - sounds interesting. although It jsut might work.

what I am working on is a count down clock. kind of like a cd player counting off the seconds of hte song. my idea is a monitor infront of my sound speaker monitor and on the screen is a countown or rather a count up so that when the song starts so does the numbers. now I would know that at 45seconds I should be producing bird #1 and at 1 minute 24seconds I need to produce my assistant and so on.

it makes my music VISUAL.
I will keep you posted on what I come up with. I have a sound guy who is looking into something for me.

Hey ron I do have been working to get CC on Magic instructional DVDs. that is one of the first things Kyle and I are working on. I can say that I will be releasing the first ever magic instructional DVD late january or early february. it is inthe process right now of having the CC added. it is actually my original DVD that I came out with 2 years ago and will rerelease it with CC.

Mean while back at the batcave kyle and I are working on another DVD project that is mums a word right now. hope to have deatails later this month.

thanks again for the thoughts and ideas.
good luck and I hope your christmas was wonderful and to all a Happy New year!!

Actually there is one magic DVD out that has subtitles. I'll have to search around to find it but I remember commenting in a post about it here on the Café. I'll let you know when I find it again.

Sean Bogunia and I have had a few discussions about this. When Sean and I work together on a project he puts his head set microphone on and uses Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition. So if I can't understand anything he says I can just take a peak on the computer screen and read it. I'm planning to use it in my lectures too so I'll be able to read questions. So that program would make it much easier to make subtitles. If you need help with your subtitles let me know.

I have some other ideas for methods to help our acts as well that I think you'll find useful. I know I should wait till the forum is open but I'll just tell you the basics of this idea. I'll post about it in more detail in the deaf magicians section when it's open. But I know you do some large stage illusions so this might be useful for you now.

Imagine you are hiding and ready to make yourself appear. For example you're inside a base. Being deaf this is a hard situation because you can't hear the music. I know there are methods such as they tap or pull a string or something to let you know. But here's a better method and it'll improve your timing (Not only for deaf but anyone in this situation).

Pick up a surveillance camera and a small display screen. Aim the camera at the stage and put the display in the base (Or where ever the hiding place is). Now you can watch the act from inside the base from the audience point of view and know exactly when it's time to come out.

I like the camera idea. we use a light right now for me and it works. however in a different illusion the camera idea may be the way to go.

as for the CC I have a company that is doing it for me. I would be interested in knowing what DVD is out there with CC. that's great some did it. Can only hope more will follow.

thanks

This is why I am SOOOOO glad Ron is a part of our project team for 2009. With the 3 of us working together and then bringing in others, we can accomplish so much in the new year. I mean the wealth of information that we all have and can share is great as well as the pasison we all have to make a difference.

I can not wait for this section to come up on the Café. It first starts here and this is the first place we each can make a difference and get people knowing about issues and answer questions for people. Thank you again Steve for doing this for us.

In the new year us 3 need to get together in an online chat and just talk over ideas.

Loss of hearing............ that sucks !
I was learning mentalism all thru my mid 30's and found out that
people were laughing at ......... WHAT?
I was responding wrong to what was being told to me. Funny. Ha Ha.
They say: "In my pocket" and I hear " near the rocket".
OK, I needed hearing aids. Woooooooosh.
Started losing 4-5% of hearing a year. The hearing aids got bigger and BIGGER and BIGGGER and now behind the ear and the size of a banana. I'm down now to 40% hearing (60% loss).
Well, I had to stop the mentalism and all effects that had to do with "finding something" or naming a card or name, or design or anything. Mentalism and was over for me.
.... .WELL, I obviously had an electronic device in my ears !
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Imagine Kreskin............... trying to locate a hidden object while wearing some-sort-of-electronic device
in his ears. (I don't know, maybe that's why he still has long hair for this time period.)

But for me. Mentalism and mental magic and mental everything. It's over.

I started doing hypnosis shows where I do most of the talking and I install new batteries 10 minutes
before every show. They still............. will go out and die when they get a little sweat.

On line, I feel safe. I can talk and listen as well as everyone else. This Magic Café has been a Godsend
for us that cannot hear half of what we "THINK" we hear.
So, the Internet was invented just for us! Thank you Lord !
And Al Gore if he really did Invent the Internet ..... ;-) LOL

I think the Internet and these chat places.... sort of make up for the loss we experience from
the magic DVD's not being closed-captioned. CC is VERY expensive. It's not that the DVD producers don't
want CC, but it is VERY expensive and since magic DVD's are a very low run and limited sales, the money to add CC would be quite a loss.

I'm just glad the Internet is here or I simply would not be able to make a living these days.
Not many firms want to hire the deaf and hearing impaired. And Hearing Impaired and Deaf don't get us
any disability claims at all. When will the government learn that Hearing Loss IS a disability ?

When I say I am hearing impaired, they say "HOWS THAT" real loud then continue to
whisper. Oh well. Conventions same thing.

Speaker says: CAN EVERYONE HEAR ME ! yell yell yell.......
We say: "We cant hear you.... and the speaker at the magic convention speaks up for
10 words then it drools...... back.. to......... blob blob mmmmojo sommthon.

OK, thanks for starting this topic.

and... for you really really deaf people: THANKS FOR STARTING THIS TOPIC ;-)

Any of you kiddies out there: don't go to rock and roll - music concerts -
it will be fun for 10 years then .... bloomba you wittles or for music blam blo tada.

A side note- Thanks to many who have posted in this topic who I have chatted with. We have just sent our first DVD project off for duplication, and are happy to say it bears full subtitles in English and Spanish! Please let us know if this is valuable to you and we will make sure all future DVD releases have the same.

Why THANK YOU SIR !

........ And that also means the hearing magi can read in silence so the little wife wont know he is watching another magic video.

Many times with accents, or recording problems, or talks too fast, or when the performer lowers his voice for just a word or two, the hearing impared, and others wonder .......Did he say: "Never do this...... or "Ever do this......... ???????

THANKS !

So I started th is thread quite some time ago.

and where are we?!?!?!

can the Café send us an update on the new forum? that woudl be greatly appreciated by all.

I have many things to share as well as talk about and ask questions.

for those of us already talking I wanted to share soem experiences of recent shows.

First I am onthe verge of having my music set to a clock for me to have a visual guide on stage when performing my iiluions and working on turning the Vanishing bandana into a kind of Karaoke so I can see where I am the whole time.

One thing I have been doing is removing my hearing aids and using 2 heavy monitors to pump the sound into the floor so that I can "feel" the music. I know my music well enough that I can tell where I am inthe routine.

I just finished a weekend of shows at a theme park and this method was perfect. I also worked out ways to have people on stage volunteering and never knowing that I am deaf. Its like magic:) then when I get tot he end of the show and perform a very special illusion ( my version of gypsy thread) and share about being Deaf although I can not hear the audible gasp I can see it on their faces. I love that moment. as I share aobut difficulties in life and that if you work hard and believe in yourself you can accomplish anything. I still perform full time and will never give in or give up.

lets hope this forum gets up and running this year!

So yes I reviving this very old thread I started in 2008!

as the years have past I am now completely deaf, created a new show Called "Silent Magic" the magical exploration into the world of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. I have worked with and performed for the PA School for the Deaf and Hearing loss Assoc Of America. I now teach basic American Signlanguage along side my magic camps and after school programs.

I will be one of the featured Deaf magicians in a new book coming out in 2012 written by my close friend Simon Carmel.
I was asked to be part of and perform at the 9th US Deaf magicians festival this past summer.

over the years I have become very active in helping others that have lost their hearing both magicians and lay people.

I say all of this to ask where is the Society of World deaf magicians page!??

it has been a few years and nothing seems to have happened.

I know that other deaf magicians would love to see a spot for us and not just for us to converse with each other but to help others who are hearing understand us better as well as being able to offer guidence to those that have opportunities to entertain the Deaf.

so what is the deal where do we stand? will this ever happen?

As a memeber of the SWDM I would ask that we get a spot on the Café.

thanks for your time and hope that we can see this come thru.

I will end with this. I volunteer to be part of or help in any manner or fashion needed to make this happen. I will be a modorator or what ever else is needed.
