I was wondering if anyone knows what type of mic or transceiver Copperfield is using.
I think his mic is also linked with his crew. So he can be in touch with his crew and still broadcast his voice when needed. I am looking to buy such a system, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike |

Can you describe the mic, Mike? Does it look like it's just a flesh-coloured wire which travels from the top of one ear and down his cheek, stopping just short of the corner of his mouth?
Cheers from Toronto! Magic Roadie

Hi!!
I was on stage with David but I don't remember seeing his mic. I do not think it is the one Magic Roadie is talking about. Does anybody know more about it? Patrick Thomas |

Mike,
No such system exits pre-made. It's possible one could be fashioned from an IFB (a type of in-ear listening device, it's what newscasters are always wearing to hear what's going on air and what the director is telling them) and a wireless mic, but your sound engineer would have to mute the mic anytime you needed to talk to backstage, and the mic would have to be split off to backstage (even if you had a separate mic for comm, you'd still have to mute the reinforcement mic whenever you wanted to talk like that). Somehow I doubt DC has comm. with backstage like that, but hey, you never know. -Andy, unofficial resident sound engineer/designer

Actually I believe he does have constant communication with his crew. If you watch closely during his live performance, you will notice that during his routines he is almost constantly talking, but the audience does not hear him. I also read somewhere that he will mute the audience mic and still have a mic to comunicate with the crew.

Yes he does. I was at his show on April 17 and he would always say mute then start talking. Many times it did not mute and you heard him talking to his crew. I was just wondering what he was using. It seems like a really good idea. And it would make the show run a lot smoother I think.
Thanks for your help, Mike |

I'm pretty sure the communication is one way. From Copperfield to his crew. Most of the communication concerns things they need to do to make the next performance better but can be used if he needs something to happen. I would also bet that it is being recorded for review by DC later. If this is what he is doing all you would need is a wireless lapel mic that is on a frequency that will not interfear with other systems in the show, a wireless headphone system (for your crew) and a recorder. (If you want to record.)

As I said, then, it's not an automated system, he needs the sound engineer to manually mute it.

Checked with a friend of a friend that works on the show today. DC does have such a system. I forgot to ask him who mutes the PA mic. If I was DC I would have a momentary switch on my person to do it myself. I don't think I would use the sound engineer. How could you stop the audience from hearing you say "mute".

Hey Eldon --
Who do you know that works on the DC Crew? DC is able to talk to the crew, and they are able to talk back to him as well. He controls it himself. The system is called "stagewatch" by the crew. David uses it to issue notes about the show out to the stage manager during performance. The crew listens to stagewatch on their radios, and the entire show can be heard as well. --Jack |

Thanks for the info. Jack. I'm surprised Andy hasn't heard of "Stagewatch".
P.S. Like I said it's just a friend of a friend. PPSS: Not C.K. |

I think Michael's right; I'd guess it's a custom system of some sort, maybe based on modified IEM or IFB systems. There aren't many other performance types where a system like that would be necessary, so it's not likely to be a commercial product (and if it were, it's likely they'd refer to it by its real name, and "Stagewatch" doesn't come up in any searches).
I would imagine that it's something like David having an IFB earpiece to hear the crew, wearing a second wireless mic to talk to them, and having a mute switch on his primary mic to mute it so only his crew can hear him. That would work. It would be a bit cumbersome, because he'd have to wear three beltpacks, but in theory it could be done.

DC also probably uses it for finding plants in the audience that have been preditermined before the show.
My sister was approached at a DC show in January about if she wanted to be on stage for a trick. She still thinks it was for the panties transpo. trick (with her being a miss teen NY contestant.) All it took was for her to say I was a magician (her brother) and the people basically walked away. The system could be used for finding people like this during the show. While he is finding the plant before the actual trick, his crew is probably saying "go down into the section on your right, keep walking forward, a little farther, STOP, look to your left and you will see a young girl in a red shirt" or something along those lines. Just a thought. Evan |

No no no no....don't try to make something simple into something more complicated. I've worked his shows on three tours and this is what I saw then:
The F.O.H. sound guy mutes his mic according to what is scripted into the show and believe me, the show is scripted precisely. He does not hear radio transmissions from his crew, they only have a link to hear him through Clearcom headsets, wireless and hardwired...he is tied into the comm system. That is the so-called "stagewatch", at least when I saw it. When the crew need to talk to him...they literally talk to him, sometimes they shout responses. If you heard him talking to the crew over the mains it was because the F.O.H. mixer dropped the ball. Think about it...would you want to hear the crew nattering in your ear during a show? Not me. |

Backroomboy pretty much has it right. However the crew does not usually talk onto the stagewatch unless necessary... it is more or less so that everyone in different parts of the building can hear the show and what point it is at. Also it is for David to give out notes. He gives out show notes, and if he thinks about something, he'll tell his personal assists to take care of it (even if it is unrelated to the show).

I watched DC's "Portal" in Miami, Florida. At the end of the show I grabbed the ball to go into "13". When I got on stage one girl of his crew asked, "Are you a magician?"
Then I answered, "kind of." I was afraid of saying "yes, I am." Well...they didn't allow me to go in the illusion, I just checked if the people did really vanish...but, I could not see his mike as well...is it under his shirt???

You don't buy it, you configure it from your existing com system. All you really need is one RF link to Clearcom.
