If you have always wanted to learn how to juggle, but never had the time, patience, or a good teacher along with my MCing duties at the street performer contest I will be conducting a silk scarf juggling workshop, and no matter what your juggling ability is I can help you take your juggling skills up a notch.
FYI Ian Garrison is a magic creative genius, so be sure to see us both at the magic week celebration.

Here's a busking contest:
NYC, Washington Square Park. Who ever pulls the biggest hat wins. Any other "contest" is B.S., pretend and make believe! So, is that the gist of this contest you speak of? |

Justin my friend
Most magic conventions have both stage, and close up competitions, but a convention with a busking competition is unheard of and way over due. FAB is only trying to fill that gap. Buskers are a seperate breed, and it is about time that they get credit for their unique art. Not all of us can take a subway ride to Greenwich Village and try their hand at working the street for lunch money like you can, you lucky ducky

LOL...
It doesn't have to be NYC. Believe me; it's too intimidating for outta-towners with big dreams. I've seen many performers come to the park only to sit on the sidelines because they couldn't handle the pressure of the big apple. The crowds are vicious and will eat you alive if you ain't up to snuff. Not only that, but other performers will steal what ever crowd you gather if you can't hold 'em. And that can crush a performer. I've seen them slither out of the park all dejected. I'm just saying if you really want to find out who is best, put them out on the street and see who comes in with the biggest hat. That's the only way to determine the real winner. I mean how else can you judge a Busker? Bow down to The KING: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cf......15060065 |

I think a busking contest is a good idea and long overdue. During S.E.A.M. 2006, I scheduled a street-type show by Eric Evans as an unannounced event, designed to give the attendees something closer to actually discovering a street busker by chance. Done within the confines of the hotel, it was naturally not the real thing, but I have no doubts everyone enjoyed it (maybe except the chicken's funeral director... long story).
It will be interesting to see what elements are judged in the midst of a sanctioned event, but if one is going to compare such a contest within the realm of a magic convention to the actual life of magic on the streets, then shouldn't that apply to close-up contests, as well? Rarely, does convention close-up even remotely resemble real world close-up magic which more often than not take on the form of strolling and table-hopping. Portability and reset are rarely elements being judged. Neither is the ability to perform with enough clarity and conciseness that even a drinking crowd would watch and enjoy. Instead, it seems that the most valued convention close-up also tends to be the more esoteric, being in the unenviable position of having to please jaded magicians. It's like comparing target practice to being in a gunfight. There is no real reason for equating the two.

Right you are Michael
Restaurant close-up is usually done for 8 or less people. The tipical contestant in a close-up competition does parlor type magic, because the audience usually has 50 or more people. All of the judging at the FAB street competition will be done by the non magician audience, and I would assume that it will be based on entertainment value, which is as close to the real thing as we can get.

Don't forget to bring some rope, I will be doing a hands-on teach-in of my "Dances with Ropes" effect plus other new original rope moves Thursday at 3PM. This routine is perfect for the street perfomer, resets in seconds and bears close-up scrutiny. Also on the teach-in, "signed quarter in balloon" (really easy method), and more!!
