Greetings,
As of Mon 15, Dec, 2008, all buskers in Auckland CBD area will have to get a free License, valid for a year, to perform at certain areas in the city. http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/423466/2368160 It will possibly weed out the bad acts & at least keep a list of who is performing to a good standard from us locals who use the pitches-time will tell!! All of this is on the back of success-the Massive Buskerfest run here in summer each year that has seen huge crowds attend the performances to watch acts from all over the world, originated by top performer Nick Nickolas & Agent Pam Glaser. Full details re: busking in the general Auckland area:
http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/cou...nce/default.asp The policy was announced in the major daily newspaper, The New Zealand Herald, on Tuesday 9, December, 2008 - front page - in an article titled "Council sets out rules for buskers". The full document makes interesting reading, and there are links to "Download a Licence" (currently dated August, 2008) and "Download the Code of Conduct Handbook".

Oops, that link didn't work. Try instead: http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/......ault.asp
All the best for busking in Auckland, a city of over 1 million people. Whangarei, the city about 180 km north of Auckland [about 2 hours drive], is pretty good at the Cameron Street Mall, where I go busking with a mix of magic, circus tricks, and balloon models.

MagicCol-
Thanks for the link http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/......ault.asp Be interesting to see how it all goes over the X-mas period - will try it out on days I'm not performing the previous nights at hotels & clubs & corporate events. At least, the markets here still draw good crowds - to perform. Takapuna still gets 12,000 people in 4 hrs where I pitch & perform magic for the last 3 years! Cheers |

Hi, Brent. I meant the Cameron Street Strand in Whangarei - out on the street, not in the mall at its side. Are you going to the 27-31 Dec, 2008, Magi Convention in Auckland? I am, so may see you there.

Yes- realised you meant the mall in your area!! I pick up my license tomorrow!! I will also be at that the NZ Magicians convention in 2 weeks- I've been on the IBM Committee that is organising it- look forward to seeing you there. Have just arrived back an hour ago from the final NZ Show of World Festival of Magic featuring James Dimmare from Vegas, Jeton from Germany, & Illusionist Ryan Joyce. A really good show with these world class acts!! Cheers |

Brent, today I went to the NZ Show of World Festival of Magic over at Whangarei. James Dimmare from Vegas & Illusionist Ryan Joyce were there. And standing in for 3 days is 20 year old Mark Robinson of North Shore, Auckland. I spoke to Mark and his Dad after the 5pm show. Yesterday, Mark had one of his doves stolen during an act at Green Lane! It flew into the spectators and a woman kept it. See Herald Newspaper of today: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/articl......10548079

I saw the show where it happened.
I know Mark well. Was a bit of a disaster from Mark's point of view, as he had no control over his birds that you must have on stage, that flew off stage as well as flew up the back & got stolen, as well as the large goose that appeared before it was meant to! -Learn by our mistakes, I guess!! |
