So I am currently knee deep in creating my candle/production act. It is something I have been working extremely hard on and in a month or two I think it'll be ready for actual performance. That said... where do I perform it? Obviously I need a parlor type venue but where does a 16 year old find that type of venue?
After the new year I am going to start promoting myself allot more, but I just don't know what to do with this candle act. My hope is that by this time next year I will be doing the act enough to have justified purchasing a dove and incorporating that into the act as well. Any advice is much appreciated, C

C,
My best advice to you is the buy Denny's lecture notes. That is Denny from Denny and Lee's. The information in his lecture notes are extremely important to you at this stage in your magical career. Trust me. Jim

I just saw the Gustfasons present their "Magic by Candlelight" they have done for years also on the Ed Sullivan show. It is tough to work it because of the fire regulations. Dick has even replaced the open flame in a couple of tricks with the battery powered lights.
The second problem is most people are looking for complete show not an act. Variety shows are few and far behind. I have not seen Denny's lecture notes but I know Denny and anything he puts his name on is good. Richard

James, where may I find these notes?
Also, I can certainly use this act to start a stage show or presentation. Doesn't have to just be this 3:30 act. Thanks guys, C

I decide long ago after seeing Lance Burton's act that I will NEVER do candle work b/c I can never do it as well as he could. I could do it very well...but not Lance well and so I decided to put it down and never do it again.
Good luck with your act.

Candle magic has always been this classical, beautiful thing. For the most part it has yet to be done with attitude, which is where I step in. C

C,
I say go for it because it's going to be your personality and your likeability. I don't know where you expect to play, but unless someone can afford to fly Lance Burton in for a company xmas party, they would turn to you. But only if people like you. Denny's notes you get from Denny. The reason I suggested them is because he outlines all the possible types of acts you can have, where they can play, and which type of act gives you the most potential to book in the most venues. Jim

As I have noted in the posts there is no more candle magic than the magic done with Mr. Fantasio's gimmicks.
Of course that's not true. Quote:

To me nobody will overpass Cardini so lets drop the cards to the trash also!! Yes Mr Burton int this case you too. Of course Im being sarcastic... you can find your way to do a remarcable act with candles using fantasio's or a new/old deceptive method. Regarding to your question... maybe you don't have a lot of opportunities to do the act but you are going to learn and think a lot about steals, manipulation, stage and the forgotten gimmick in the magic literature... the ditcher-table!! One possibility to do your act a lot is just going to the Hospital or a Third years old residence and give your work for free. They are going to be a good audience and both of you are winning. You practice and they have fun. D |

The true greats of candles cards and manipulation period would be Cardini Neil Foster and Lance Burton.... I think there is only so much than can be done with an vanishing or appearing candle and for the most part it has most likely already been done. But the one thing that will never be copied is you, and what ever " moves " you have done have already been done but your unique stage presentation and costume will very like set you apart from the rest.... the biggest problem I see with canes candles and cards is that at this point I feel that they are over done just too many people doing them......
But keep working hard taking every gig you can get because you never know who is the audience Cheers Mike |

True Majectic12. I do a couple of things with the candles that have never been done. They are part of my contest act. And as you can see on my award page they have done me well. But, it was funny what you said. LOL
