In trying to come up with venues to perform, I was considering trying to pitch the idea of a street magician at either one of the local amusement parks or the local outdoor music theatre.

I was thinking that the amusement park may benefit from having some entertainment in the park, either strolling or at a fixed yet mobile location (to perhaps draw crowds to various areas) and that I could either ask to be paid or just ask permission to pass the hat. That would have the advantage of not costing them anything.

Has anyone tried this sort of venue? Any advice?

Also, the outdoor music theatre draws large crowds for concerts. Even if I don't get permission to be inside (they have a large fenced in area), setting up outside the actual venue seems like a good place to work where there are a lot of people.

Any ideas or comments on this?

Thanks!

Keep this in mind. If people are watching you they are not spending money at the amusement park.I was given that excuse for not being hired 25 years ago at the local fair. Even though you may be free you might be ultimately costing them $$$$$$$$.

Michaels,
True enough. I would counter with the entertainment angle for their guests (and hopefully putting them in a good mood), the fact that I could draw people to a specific area where the could spend even more money and that a buck a person wouldn't be that significant to the bottom line.

Maybe?!?

actually to disagree with Micheals. I work the majority of my time for the boston Red SOx on a street that they block off to ticketholders only. So there are business's out there that will look at it as a draw to their business.

Mat your venue is different than a carnival.
You were hired to entertain to draw the crowd towards businesses. That is no different than being hired for restaurant work. Carnivals are providing their own entertainment (which they are constantly charging for) in the form of games, cotton candy and rides.
Carnies do not want people standing around watching free entertainment. IMO magicians would not be the draw to a carnival.

I see truth in most of posts so far....

Even if you don't charge, you are holding people up from spending so, yes, you will not be wanted.

If you pass the hat almost anywhere it will be seen as taking money from surounding stores, etc.

The hiring for the ticket holders is different. You are hired as a courtesy to the, already, customer.

I have done suites at our local stadium as a thank-you fom the stadium to the big buck suite renters. Not all visiters to suites are interested in the game. Some are there because the boss invited them and it would be a bad career choice to decline.
