Hi All,
I've just bought a dog arm puppet (not yet received) and I am wondering if it is the case to start learning a little bit some vent techniques I think that kids love puppets and that the vent effect is stronger than whispering my questions are: -do you think that it is possible for a "guy" 40 yrs old (me) start learning this technique? - any source to learn quickly and with a "mild" effort ( other than Steve Taylor works on this matter)? - if you balance the benefit/efforts ratio, do you honestly think that it is worth to spend hours trying to learn this technique? thanks in advance for your replies |

Hi Fagani
You can certainly start learning...it's easy if you really like what you do. Check out the ff forums for some really useful Vent infos. The Magic Café http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewf......182&2053 Belly Talkers http://www.bellytalkers.com/index.php and some puppets for sale...in case you want a vent style puppet. Wanlu,
I can't believe you didn't include this link. http://www.axtell.com/ventins.html Steve Axtell's primer on ventriloquism.

I used the Maher Course, which I highly recommend. Learning to vent is very similar to learning proper singing technique, as the "power" comes from the diaphragm. Watch any vent when he's tired, and the lips start to move (including my own). It's at this point that the voice starts too tire, also.
It's definitely worth the effort to learn, but bear in mind that alongside of lip-control, you need to be an actor, and acquire superb puppet manipulation skills. If you ever get to see Kimmo in action, you'll understand what puppet manipulation means - he's the best I've ever seen at making a puppet "come alive" simply through it's movement and expression. Kids love "Scooby Doo" and he sounds like he's talking without even opening his mouth! You might try a funny dog voice produced in your throat before you tackle ventriloquism. It's a step between a "whispering dog" and a dog which speaks perfect English. You may simply find that it is more entertaining to kids and that's the name of the game, after all! Also keep in mind what Potty said about Kimmo's puppet manipulation. It's more important that the dog "come alive" than for it to speak perfectly or even "Scooby Doo speak."

Of course you can do it. I didn't start vent until I was in my forties. Opens up worlds of new possibilities as an entertainer!

It's Jerry Garcia! Back to the question...yes you can learn. Your question made me wonder something. Some Latin based languages, if not all, have a rolling with some letters. Is that more difficult than in English or another language without that rolling? I'm serious, I've never seen a vent in, say, Spanish.

Yes, rolling the r's, I could never do it when I lived in South America and it is something that I thought would be difficult.
