Its a great idea; but I'm having trouble finding a suitable UK bottle where I don't have to expand the lid...anyone found something suitable?

El Mystico - I'm not quite sure what you mean by an expanded lid!! I use a barcardi breezer bottle and gently remove the cap. That's it. It fits snugly back on and the label is the right size for the effect. Works great for me.

I met Mark Mason in Orlando at the Orlando Swapfest last February and he demo'd it there. It is a nice trick and not that hard to do. If you get a PK ring and a steel core quarter you can put an extra spin on it.

I just picked this up and I have had good luck using a tri fold quarter.

I've also had good luck using a tri-fold, which is good since I can't seem to find a center cut.

There is one called the "3 in 1 Quarter". It is a folding quarter that folds in the middle. I found one in a box full of stuff I had sitting in the closet. If you need it let me know. I have plenty of other folding coins.

Fbnc,
Mark Mason sells the center cut coin for a fair price! On the other hand I don't see why a tri fold wouldn't work especially if you either doubled your band or used a heavier elastic! MMc |

TC, I appreciate the offer but the Magic Warehouse will have these coins soon.
The more I work with this the more I like it. I'm becoming less comfortable with the tri-fold coin. I will try double banding it as per Mickey's idea. Tim |

Blindspot is a rip-off of The Insider by Jon Allen.
The gimmick is virtually identical. Bob should have done his research before releasing this one. |

I can't find anything on "Insider"! Is/was it a marketed effect? I don't know Bob and have only met Mark at a convention but from what I've read and heard these guys are quite diligent in their research!
It seems odd that this is the first accusation of theft I've seen! I'd be interested in the basis of this alleged rip off! Thanks, MMc |

Hi Guys,
I’ve only just picked up on this topic and I think I need to clarify the situation: Bob Swadling did not rip off ‘The Insider’ and likewise, I did not rip off ‘Blindspot'. At FFFF last year, I saw Bob do a coin in bottle routine where the cap was on the bottle. It was a totally different routine, using a totally different gimmick. However, the fact the cap was on the bottle got me thinking about how a standard Coin in Bottle could be done like this. I developed the idea, and showed a home-made prototype to a couple of friends. I got to the stage where I had ordered a number of the units. At the I.B.M. British Ring convention last September, I got a call on my mobile from one of the friends who had seen the prototype telling me to go and speak to Bob Swadling ASAP. Bob told me had come up with the same gimmick a few years earlier. There are a couple of subtle differences but they are essentially the same gimmick. Mark Mason had the rights to it and was due to release it a couple of months after the convention. I spoke to Mark about possibly doing a collaboration but his project was too far down the line. I had already got my gimmicks made, but I said I would not try and launch mine in competition with his. I have it for sale but do not expect to see any magazine reviews or major advertising. I sell it directly and at lectures. I never even got around to putting it up on my website yet. There may be one or two dealers who decide to pick it up but I am not actively looking to go down that route. That’s why you can’t find it anywhere. Many times people have independently come up with the same idea… and I should know! Try asking Danny Archer about ‘Phobia’… I hope that clears up the situation. Jon

I take it back then. Bob didn't rip off Jon. Jon has done the right thing in not publicising his too heavily.
I do however have both (CIB junkie) and so can make a comparison: Bob recommends that you use a bottle with a label at the top. Jon's handling gets around this so you can use pretty much any bottle with a cap. Bob's gimmick has an extra feature which adds to its deceptiveness IF used with a bottle with a label. Jon's version has an additional component which allows you to carry the gimmick in your pocket loaded. Both do the job of getting the coin in a bottle with a cap on. Jon's costs less. In summary, for the price, Jon's version wins for me. |

Thank you Jon for that clarification!
Andi, You seem to be rather quick on the trigger when reviewing, praising or bashing products and magicians and if I can make one suggestion it would be: Be sure your guns are properly loaded, do ALL your research PRIOR to starting the hunt and be sure you KNOW what your target is! You seem to jump on band wagons and switch sides at the drop of the hat (Michael Vincent threads) yet your posts lack substantiation! Trust me when I tell you, you won't win any popularity contests in the magic fraternity playing these games! Maybe you don't care, I don't know but what I do know is that one little comment about someone/thing being a rip off can have a HUGE ripple effect! You seem like a very enthusiastic young man and I wish you luck and success in all your magic endeavors! MMc |
