Just read this on People.com:

Quote:
An employee of David Copperfield was hospitalized Wednesday with a broken arm after one of the illusionist's tricks went awry on stage.

The unidentified employee was assisting Copperfield during the "fan illusion" and got his arm caught in the fan. In the illusion, Copperfield appears to walk through the fan and disappear as he turns to smoke.

The show, dubbed An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion, took place in Las Vegas at MGM Grand's Hollywood Theatre.

"This is a trick David has done over 3,000 times," executive producer Chris Kenner says. "This was a freak accident."

The show was stopped after the mishap, but it's unlikely the crowd could get a clear view of the accident, Kenner says.

"He is recovering," Kenner says. "People are always saying that it's magic and it isn't dangerous. This goes to show you that it is."

Kenner said Copperfield will continue to perform the fan illusion in his shows. None of Copperfield's shows at MGM Grand have been postponed due to the incident.

Wow, that is freaky. Nothing saying how the assistant is doing? That, I'd like to know. I didn't know DC was still doing The Fan. Last time I saw him, he didn't do it. It is nice to see he is bringing back the classic of DC back into the show.

Hope the assistant gets better.

While our Jet Turbine is different than Copperfield's fan...it nonetheless does have real potential danger to it. Bottom line is, illusion or not....you still have giant blades spinning, and there is enough weight to them that they are NOT going to let anything stop them from spinning. Fortunately, Kristen has only had her elbows graze the blades.

I hope the guy is doing alright.

I hear you there, Kevin. I remember watching you guys standing on stage getting the gust of wind. A slight wrong move can be very dangerous. There is danger in a lot of illusion. And, this illusion is one to take seriously.

...I'm guessing this means that he won't be performing this effect, at least for a little bit.

Seriously, I hope the guy is doing alright, though. It's always a shame to see anyone hurt in the course of magic.

PS: Do we know if this guy is "the guy" in this illusion?

Living Illusions, I advise you to stop the Chinese Water Torture Cell. That is, if you want to still be "Living Illusions." Smile

Penn and Tellers Bullet Catch is STILL the most amazing thing I've ever seen!!!! I know there's "something" to it, knowing basic bullet catch principles, but they just fry me with it! AWESOME!!!!

I do the SJ and the Spike Roulette in my show, so I'm glad to know that I'm doing 2 of the 10 most dangerous. Very cool!

Interesting list- gives some insight into the mind of the layman. (Has anyone been seriously injured while being sawn in half*?)

(* By a professional magician, of course- we're not counting some kid who hurt his sister after ignoring the "don't try this at home!" disclaimer.)

I always keep that in mind because I had the same experience in my illusions during a show, even though I did it like thousand times.

Nothing is impossible, just like magician's motto.

Hope he's getting better.
