Just did the Deathtrap, which is one of those knife in the bag tricks. Guess where it's at.
Anyway, I instructed the volunteer how to put the knife in, with the sharp side up and to cover the 4 spots with bags... Well there I was, for a good 30 seconds trying to figure out why the knife was not making itself "known" to me - and - I finally took a guess at the bag BUT lifted up. There was the knife! I managed to sell the trick anyway. What was the problem? The b put the knife in the slot with the blade pointing down! even after I went through a thorough set-up she still screwed it up. They were drinking lots of wine before the show...... apparently.

I feel for you Jay. It's tough doing anything when folks have been drinking. Once we did a show for a Fire Dept. awards program. I called the Fire Chief up to help with a trick, before we did anything he announced he was going to make the glass of beer he was holding disappear. He proceeded to pour the majority of it down his shirt as he tried to drink it down. I also found out never to pick someone to help with the Tricky Bottles that has been drinking. They never follow directions. I'm happy to hear you were able to still sell the trick. When I first started reading your story I thought it was going to end up the same as a video I saw of a guy smacking down the wrong sack and either stabbed himself with a knife or maybe it was a bottle, either way,I'm glad that did not happen to you.
Take care, Bob. |

Nope and thank you for the well wishes.
I guessed at the bag she put the knife under because I had one bag already upside down when I introduced the props. She didn't look like she was following along so I assumed that she probably put the knife under the already upside down bag because..... "that's the kind of person she is" drunk, or not. It never dawned on me that she left a spot empty AND I always ask them to empty their pockets so there are no extra surprises like a pencil in another spot AND I always pick someone who looks like an executive so they will "play nice" Come to think of it.... unless you have someone tip you, this is NOT the kind of a trick to do on the street.
