Friend, teacher and close up magic legend Armando Lucero is offering a number of his brilliant card and coin workshops from January of 2009 through June.
Armando has been living and working in Asia this past year and it was doubtful if he was ever going to share his pet work and material in such a format again. On one hand I'm extremely happy that more people will have access to this unique and beautiful type of magic, sleights, theory, philosophy and execution. At the same time I'm a little bummed for the exact same reasons. You can register, get more information and view the schedule's here: http://www.armandolucero.com/ZwkshpSchedule.html I wanted to give you card guys a proper head's up and wish you all a very happy holiday season, Merry Christmas and magical New Year. Warm regards, Jerome Finley

I've heard of Mr. Lucero's Coin Menagerie, and while I'm sure that it's worth every penny he's charging for a significant piece of his life's work, I find it irksome that ANYONE with deep pockets is privy to this routine. I realize that this sounds like sour grapes (I don't have three grand)but if it were me (in Armando's position) I'd feel a lot better if my routine was placed in the hands of someone with a fair amount of competency, rather than (just) a lot of disposable income.
It's kind of analogous to the guy who sold the first apple to a naive young couple...look where it got them. Fine- my analogy sucks-sue me. Money rules I guess. |

The Coin Menagerie really kicks ***. One of the few things I've seen that look like real magic. Armando is amazing, and a nice guy to boot.

Has anyone already attended one of Armando Lucero's workshops? Any impressions you care to share?

Mr. Lucero gave a workshop at the little convention we hold on the west coast. I was too busy to attend. His customers were more than happy with the workshop.
The magic he did for us, at the convention and his lecture were otherworldly. He is the most enchanting magical performer I've ever seen. I don't want to know how his magic is done. I'm much happier with the memory of his performance. |

Chris,
Armando buys lunch Ed, While I feel your frustration, posts like yours might do more for you when aimed at Armando himself. Honest communication can open up many doors... Also, it's not just for people with deep pockets(!). Everybody who has studied with Armando has been a serious, dedicated, hard working student of the art and just because a person has the money to attend doesn't always mean they are getting into his workshop. Armando communicates directly with all his students and pre-screens the attendee's taking their skill level and experience into consideration before giving them a green light to attend. I picked up extra gigs and put a small percentage away from each performance away to pay his fee. I'm glad I did. pepka, I couldn't agree with you more! Armando is the most thorough teacher I've ever had and one of the kindest, most sincere people I've ever met. Armando is magical even without his jaw-dropping performances. snape, I was part of the first 'Coin Menagerie' and 'Pasteboard Devices' workshop over a year ago. You can read about my experience on his website in the 'CM' section. It changed my life, pure and simple. My magic, my art, approach, repertoire, execution/delivery and theory were all transformed. I'm a mentalist (full time) and have been involved with magic for over 20 years. I gave up card and coin work years ago to persue my love and passion for hypnosis and mind reading and became disenchanted with close up magic . . . until friend and teacher Paul Vigil introduced me to Armando's work via a breathtaking performance of his 'Coin Menagerie' and 'The Empanada' (thought of card routine). A vow was made right then and there; if I was ever going to perform magic again it would be Armando Lucero's work exclusively! I attended the first workshop offered (cards and coins) and have been using his system ever since. As a mentalist, I learned more about 'mind reading' from Armando's coin work than I ever did from mentalism itself. It made everything I do BETTER. His principles and theory put my work through an alchemical process; I began to structure everything I did according to Armando's standards for excellent performances (i.e. multiple layers of deception, multiple methods, intersecting moments, progression and development of the effect, timing and delivery, psychology, etc). These were all things I THOUGHT I understood. I was wrong. After studying with Armando, examining my career and artform under a micoscope and continuing with his teachings I've become 10X the performer I was before. I was personally empowered through his lessons and teachings. I've grown by leaps and bounds since! To this day I only perform two pieces of magic - Armando's 'Coin Menagerie' and 'The Empanada.' I figure if I was going to perform close up of any kind, it had to be the best. I'd put these two pieces up against ANY card or coin routine in the world (gladly), and I've never seen better. If you've not seen them performed live, you're in for the treat of a lifetime. The Coin Menagerie is the most difficult and challenging piece of magic I've ever learned in any branch or genre. I've worked on it faithfully for 6-8 hours a day for over a year and am just barely getting to the point where it can be performed easily and naturally. It's a lot of work (both cards and coins) but WELL worth it. I would have paid the price for his workshop many times over - after seeing the 'Menagerie' live I would have dropped 10K for it and that's no exaggeration. Best of luck to all who attend! There's no way you could be sorry Happy Holidays, Jerome F.

Dear Friends
I first saw Armando perform his coin act at The Magic Castle in 2002, I saw him again in 2003 at The 4F convention. It was here that I saw The Empanada for the first time, it was one of the most astonishing things I have ever seen with cards performed. When I heard that Armando ran workshops teaching this routine and his philosophy, I knew there and then that I wanted to be one of his students. In 2005 at FISM Stockholm, I enrolled on Armando's workshop and I have to say, it was expensive, but worth penny. The Empanada and the technique taught have changed the way I think about sleight of hand, construction, audience attention control and many other techniques. The Emapnada has changed the way I think about card magic, it has changed the way my audience respond to my card magic, it has changed everything for the better. Armando's course isn't for everyone; it is reserved for individuals who want to want to move to another level of magical expression. This course pushed me outside my comfort zone and in the process, I discovered what kind of magician I wanted to be and how I want my audience to perceive my magic. To find out if this is right for you try and answer these two questions: When an audience watch you perform, what do you want them to think and how do you want them to feel when it is all over? Armando's workshop can help you answer these question in a profound way. I am glad Armando has placed a high premium on this process because secrets have become to easy and accessible. Wonderful post, Mike. Thank you!
I look forward to meeting you one day and have always been impressed by Armando's students. I hear you perform a great 'Empanada' and I'd be honored to see you work sometime! Merry Christmas, Jerome

I remember posts a while ago where he and others defended the multiple thousand dollar tag on his matrix routine by saying that it only attract "dedicated students". Most of the dedicated students of magic that I know who haven't sold their souls for $4.99 a download yet or come from money are poor to be generous, and certainly don't have a few grand lying around. It seems like that's just a convenient answer that sounds good at the same time. If he really wanted to keep his material a secret or only dispense knowledge to true students of the art there are better ways to go about it. Period. People have the right to charge whatever they want for their ideas and their time, but it seems a bit disrespectful to try and put a morally ambiguous wrapper on it. |

Does Mr. Lucero interview all comers, or just the people who can afford his fee? Vinni,
I doubt very much that having a grand to drop on a magic course makes you a serious student. It makes you a wealthy student. There are a fair number of rich folks who really dig magic. Yoko bought the entire line of Tenyo stuff for her son when he visited his first magic shop. That's a fair amount of cash, but I don't know how 'serious' he was. Is AL vetting his students before allowing them to attend? Do they have to audition? I mean even if you the the money to get into Harvard, you have to prove you're "serious" with a lot more than cash. Not knocking the man, by any means. Good on him, for being able to command those prices. It does keep the bar high enough that his stuff isn't likely to end up exposed on YouTube, so he's got that goin' for him. Which is nice. |

I still see MAGIC when Armando works... and to be honest, like Kent Gunn... I don't want to know how he does it.
I found myself unhappy when I got Kent's manuscript on his work with the cups and balls... I so much enjoyed being fooled over and over again. Now that I kno whow it's done, that feeling has been lost.

Six or eight years ago in Vegas Armando would not even allow cameras to film his matrix, He also sold his lecture notes for 20 dollars a piece he could of combined several notes, but choose not toyes this bothered me.
Yet the line went out the door magicians and lay persons bought his material along with other effects created by magicans in his notes.. Things have changed since then, and everyone needs to make a living this is all I am saying. True some wealthy people will spend the cash just to find the secret this does not mean they will be able to perfect or perform it. The serious student will take the time to do this IMO. I hope I never see his effect on you tube by some kid but this is the chance Armando is taking, orthe price you pay for letting a great thing out vinny |

I re-read what I posted and realized I was not clear.
Steve, I agree with you, he is in it for the money but he has the right to charge whatever he wants. Maybe he does screen his potential students to make sure they will uphold his standards. |
