Hey Fellow Magi,
I am an American citizen who has lived in Canada for almost 16 years. I often purchase items from the U.S. on auction sites and have things shipped here. USPS shipping for items under 4 pounds are usually not more than 15-20% higher than shipping to anywhere in the U.S. All that you have to do is fill out a small sticker declaring what's inside. In all these years I've only had 2 small packages not arrive and I have a lot shipped here. I am only telling you this so that you won't be afraid to sell to your reputable neighbors to the North. Many of you already do. Just know that it is not the same as shipping to most places overseas. Much easier and cheaper! Lou |

I never understood why many of our friends from USA are not willing to ship stuff to Canada.
On the other hand they ask other friends to ship to USA... |

I recently shipped off a "Reading Is Magic/King Midas" (the Barry Mitchell item) to a gentleman in Canada. Took it to the USPS initially. They said that since it was over 4 pounds it would cost "a lot" more. Those were the lady's words, not mine. She quoted me $24. So, I opted to ship FedEx, using my employee (75%) discount. Since I said it was valued over $10, I had to fill out a commercial invoice. Then, even WITH my discount, it was over $45! WOWZERS! I was floored. The buyer was nice enough to understand and offer to reimburse shipping. I was absolutely astounded at the difference.

WOW
I would have used UPS LOL Steve I had lethal weight about 6 lbs shipped from Florida to Canada and it was 31.00 that is with 1000.00 of insurance for loss and Damage.....I don't like to use USPS because I find it is too slow and your unable to track it....Now if you were shipping FedEx express yes it would be a 100.00 bucks to ship but if you ship FedEx ground it would be reasonable......25 30 dollars with out your discount......One more thing when you ship FedEx Express or UPS Express the Charge that the UPS or FedEx charge to broker the Parcel across the boarder is included in the shipping this is because the parcel comes by air and must be Cleared through customs in the air in order that the one day service happends...it is most often on more expensive items better to pay the higher shipping amount to avoid the brokerage fee.....please note this is only for shipping from the USA........ One more thing for our American friends...if the shipping is high just tell us we will most likely pay the difference I know I do Cheers Mike |

The key is communication. For example, a book weighing over 13 ounces, costs $6.50 to Canada, media in U$A is $2.50. OUCH!

As many people know, I live in Canada on the U.S. border, and ship to and from 'both sides.'
There are many anomalies when it comes to shipping to, from, and within, both countries. For instance, I can ship from WA State to Toronto through USPS for less (and often quicker) than I can from Vancouver (B.C.) to Toronto, using Canada Post! Overall, I must admit that USPS offers many more services and shipping choices, and at a generally much lower cost; from Media Mail, to various flat-rate Priority products, which include confirmation free, when you do the on-line prep. But with all due respect to Canada Post, it operates in an equitable geographic area, with 1/10th the market/revenue and still provides a better service than many other Industrial nations. But the reality is, as soon as your shipment crosses an International boundary, there can be, and often is, a delay while the package is processed. Having said that, confirmation/tracking is an essential component for all shipping, particularly given the recent reminders on here, that there are dishonest people in this world, in every nook and cranny! So, bottom line is, if you take minimal precautions, you're as secure in shipping from the U.S. to Canada (or vise-versa) as shipping within your own country. It might take a little longer, but then again, sometimes it's surprising how fast things can move from one country to the next! |

I have been waiting a month for some DVDs from a Canadian shipper/longtime Café member and fear they were lost at sea (or who knows where . . .). Any time you cannot get tracking, there's a bit of risk. I think that since there are services to/from Canada with tracking, people should use for transactions over $50 or so. Don't you agree? Who is liable if items don't arrive? As seller, I've refunded for non-arrivals, and as a buyer, I am tempted to demand the same? What do you think?
For me, the real problem is when you send to Europe/Turkey/Philippines (where a package went missing two months before finally turning up - but the buyer got angry and I got angry over his insinuations to me . . .). Regards, Todd |

I have only had one package not arrive in recent memory. DJG shipped a package of chop cup balls ($10). He kept checking with me and offered a refund several times. I deeply appreciated his offer for the refund, but kept hoping that they would show up. DJG was a stand up guy and the $10 refund wasn't worth his trouble or mine. Again, I appreciated his wanting to make it right (rare these days!).
I have both sold and bought from/to U.S. Rarely a problem. As Mumblemore states, it is different than shipping overseas. Lou |

The reasons I don't ship to Canada any more concern the immense amount of paperwork necessary to get things there. I used to ship sheet music and books to Canada on a fairly regular basis. I used FedEx, because it was cheaper than UPS and USPS at the time.
Then a few years ago, FedEx changed its policy on shipping. In order for me to ship to Canada by FedEx ground, I was REQUIRED to fill out FIVE PAGES of customs declarations and initiate a ground waybill ON MY COMPUTER, because the ground waybills at the FedEx locations were good only in the US. It became completely INSANE. Then we sent a shipment of CD's to a dance workshop in Toronto via UPS Red Label. The clerk at the UPS store assured us it would get there within the required time limit. The shipment spent TWO WEEKS in a customs broker's office while they figured out what to do with them. Then they were returned to us, because the workshop was over. The financial loss was unbelievable. So, twice burned, thrice shy.

As a Canadian resident, I have found that regular USPS Intl shipping is the cheapest (on both ends), and most reliable way of receiving shipments. The downside is you have to be prepared to wait for unpredictable lengths of time. I've had books shipped from Arizona. So will arrive in 3 days....others in 3 weeks; but at least they get here. If FedEx or UPS is used, the receiver "risk" getting a broker fee assessed on the delivery. I've been "hit" for upwards of $100; not worth it. Mike |

Hi Bill,
Last year you sent your leather chop cup to me in Canada via USPS. Got it in one week with no problem. Again, beautiful cup and great price. Thanks again! Lou |

Todd, there is a surprising amount of confusion/debate over who is responsible for a shipment. While I'm not a lawyer, I can tell you that according to Ebay/Paypal, the responsibility is ALWAYS the Seller's to ensure that the package arrives (with proof). Sellers who make claims that they will not be responsible for shipments (unless insurance, etc. is purchased), are, at least according to Ebay, quite wrong, and still, very much responsible.
Obviously Magic Café sales may seem to be a different issue, but from a 'community' standpoint, it makes sense to me that we live by the same rules. Bill; 5 pages of docs??? Wow, I've never come across anywhere near that level of bureaucracy on anything under $2,000 in value. I would reiterate that, from my experience having shipped hundreds of items in the past few years) USPS is generally your best bet to ship from the U.S. to Canada. |

Yes it is more expensive to ship from Canada to USA.
And I do not even complain and still do business with my friends from the States. That's my point. Quote:

Brian it is half the price for us to receive then send from most places.
Like Eric had mentioned we are the second largest country with a small population. So we do have to pay more according to cost of transport and demand. Bill I have bought a lot from the U.S. via USPS and have never heard of 5 pages of documents. Your experience is definitely an anomaly. Eric |

For us to ship from Canada to the USA it requires one form of address, contents and value. I will not buy anything from the USA shipped UPS as their brokerage fees are astronomical. USPS and Fed-Ex are great. Standard waiting time is three weeks whether I buy or sell, sometimes sooner.
Only had one parcel lost and that was during hurricane Katrina so never did find it but refunded money. Shipping cost are corrected as stated above. |

Hi Eric (Papasmurf),
Bill had to fill out forms for Fed-Ex I believe. Both Fed-Ex and UPS (not USPS) have onerous forms to fill out. The U.S. post office has easy (and very short!) form to complete. Lou |
