Hey Justin!

Sure I have time for an update. I went to see my surgeon and oncologist on Tuesday (2 days ago). Surgeon says that I am healing fine. I am just under 6 weeks since surgery for stage 3A lung cancer. I have a 14" incision that runs around under my right arm and shoulder. I also had a section of 2 ribs removed from under the shoulder blade. I have some pain from the incision, but the majority is from the missing ribs and the muscle and nerves that are re-growing and healing. There is no sign of cancer in my body at this point, but since it grew through my chest wall, it has to be in my blood in microscopic amounts. That is why I will be getting 4 rounds of chemo-therapy - to kill any stray cells looking for a place to latch onto and begin growing. The chemo will last for 4 months and I will begin this month. I am also being tested for a possible vaccine. It is a clinical trial that appears very promising.

The statistics of surviving lung cancer are some of the most daunting of all of the cancers. Most people (84%) are not diagnosed early enough to have a chance. By the time there are symptoms, the cancer has progressed to an incurable stage. But with every step forward your odds begin to increase. I have several things working in my favor, and very little that work against me, so my odds get better each day. I look forward to seeing this in the rear view mirror soon!

I am blessed to have such a great network of support from family and friends. The magic community has been incredible! DO NOT THINK FOR ONE MINUTE that your words of encouragement fall on deaf ears. I appreciate all of the support that I have received and re-read it often. As anyone that has faced something like this will tell you, having that support is priceless.

Thanks for the concern!

Scott

Scott, somehow the excitement in your face in your avatar comes across in your posts. Keep on healing. All the best.

Hang in there and stick it through.

Just a personal question: any family history of lung cancer? Are you or were you a smoker? A coal miner?

I managed to quit smoking after a night in the hospital in Gettysburg, PA, surrounded by ghosts of soldiers who told me that I didn't know what courage was....

And they were right, of course.

That was two and a half years ago. But still, I sometimes get the willies about what I did to my health during those twenty years of smoking. Smile

I don't want to die until I'm about 130 or so.

Scott, may YOU live to be 131! Like Doug Higley.

Stone-

The Gettysburg story brought chills...

I have been there several times, once around the 4th of July. Very spooky!

I am an absolute believer that there are ghosts in that battlefield. I have actually heard the sounds of the battle and cries of wounded. Rode horseback there a few years back, and stayed in an area that had a dark history. Good thing you listened to the voices...

Scott- you go guy! The most tuffness is always needed when you close on the end of a fight. Hang tuff...
