His is the best post I've read in a long time. That's what happens when the enmity of an agile mind is awakened. |

There are no short-cuts to achieving an artistic vision of any sort, unless one borrows from another artist. This, of course, does not achieve the goal of arriving at a vision that will define the artist, although it may allow him to adopt a style, and feel second best.

Agreed.
No true artist would ever want to be called second best. |

With his millions, I'm sure he had someone scoping out my Floating Ball performance, appropriated the music for himself, and would have dared me to take legal action. I bet Lance had spies at a local ballet company and heard Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" long before he decided to use it for himself. The whole idea of music being off-limits once it is used by a "name" magician is silly. I agree, using the Pendragons' music and performance style for Metamorphosis is entirely unacceptable. Now, if they paid Survivor for the sole rights to use the music in a magic performance, that is something entirely different. If the rights issue is settled, there is nothing wrong with using the same music for something entirely different, unless the "appropriated" music is original to the illusionist. As a matter of fact, watching other magicians' performances while spending hours searching iTunes and other sources for the perfect song is as much of a "research tool" as anything else. A magician sitting in a theater or watching a movie on HBO probably listens to every cut from a sountrack with the idea of how he can use it in his show. Heck I do that and I don't even perform!

And I add: Never work with people who also use rip-offs, never sell them something, never help them in any way (except a helping explacation why) unless - they change their mind and destroy their crap. BTW for all uninformed: It´s a Jim Steinmeyer illusion. http://www.jimsteinmeyer.com/newsletter/......g06.html That does also apply to the first illusion original name "hologram". Greg Frewins stolen idea is already mentioned above. PS: If you would have seen the original close up, you would know, that this rip-off is less deceptive. The bad video quality hides that. |

I agree with Jason as well! The whole point on Op Art is a new "puzzle" illusion. Not to see if you can make another girl appear from it. It would be like saying "hey I need to make another girl appear from the Zig Zag when the first one gets out". Kinda stupid if you ask me and I think Jason has a great point. Sad that most of you will never see it.

I"m only going to make one comment..
I don't adovcate rip offs. As a die hard Ayn Rand Objectivist... I loathe them! But.. on the ONE positive note, at least he's ripped off three illusions that are RARELY seen.. and are actually very good.I wish more magicians would put more care into doing routines and illusions that not everyone does. (Yes, I'm aware that agencies and cruise lines actually WANT you to.. AK!) The bad part is that he's not a very charismatic magician.. or a very good performer.. and for the amount of time he spends with it in the audience's face.. he should go to the gym and work on that butt. |

Well... I live in Spain, near to Portugal and they are from Portugal. I know them since we have worked together sometimes on the same festival. They were a traditional Circus family woking hard there in Portugal with a succesful touring show (not in a Circus now). You can find some videos of them on youtube. That´s true, all of the illusions are knock-off, but as make-up guy has said, at least, there are rarely seen.
They doughter (Solange Kardinaly) has a nice birds act: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=1uhGb4m1bOM&feature=related Best regards. |

Hector ,
I SOMEWHAT understand the Makeguy's point but I think you've bast**rdized what he's said a bit. What is your point? I don't see any "at least" in this situation. Harbin Jr. got part of my point exactly without me even really touching much on that specific aspect. Not all illusions are improved with the addition of a second girl, this is classic crap magic thinking. Plus it's not his to "improve". Joy Joy and I are really on the same wavelength, this crap video belies the probable ineffectiveness of the knock-off Op-Art in real life. This effect isn't meant for a tiny computer screen. Also, the accolades for his "inventiveness" reveal the ignorance of some of the Café' members knowledge of WHY this illusion works, not even just the how. And back to the music Clinton, OCCASIONAL use of another's song is inevitable. However, most pros avoid it and would only use another's song as a last resort because it just fit their routine so perfectly. Art and life are about choices. To "choose" other's music is then a lazy choice. Sure they don't usually own the music but there are more songs than magic effects. But that song some else used just fits your routine so perfectly? Please. How often do you hear hacks on here say "hey and what was the song that they used?" Is that because the person asking has searched to the outer limits of the internet for original music or simply because in their lack of creativeness they want to quickly benefit from the work of another. This debate will not be won or lost on the Café', it's in your heart and you'll know if you take the easy route and find quick comfort in using other's ideas, routines and music or if you take the hard route and make AS MANY choices as you can based on your OWN THOUGHTS. So magic is an "art", umm? Then why are these simple concepts SO hard for so many "magicians" to understand? Oh back to lucavolpe's initial question "What do you think of this video?" I think it sucks and the "performer" is amateurish and laughable. Plus he's a thief. Yuck.. |

Clinton,
If that was your "point exactly" then you need to reread your initial post because that surely wasn't the point you ended up making. People shouldn't rationalize too much just so they can sleep better. There is just TOO MUCH music out there to be concerned with what someone else is using in their routine and of course too many songs to be using other's songs so quickly and freely. This place could use a bit less devil's advocacy and hypotheticals and a lot more ethics and character. Laziness in music selection is only a sign of laziness in other areas and a demonstration of lack of creativity and lack of character. People can justify as they will but the truth is the truth. |

Here's where I disagree with you. Ending up with the same music as someone else isn't "a sign of laziness in other areas and a demonstration of lack of creativity and lack of character". In many cases it might just indicate coincidence. As for music, performers who try to maintain a contemporary feel to their performances will probably go for the most current music. They will likely end up with the same (or very similar) music. Those who shoot for a "classic" feel will end up with classical (or "classic rock").
If I extrapolate your ethics argument, is it unethical to use the same color Wellington Origami as another, better-known performer? I do not condone knock-off illusions. I do not condone knock-off performances or knock-off performance styles. I do not have a problem, however, with two performers using the same music for different effects if everything is legal. On this, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

Odd you say that as I happen to have the Op-Art Op-Art with a Black Grey and Silver color Scheme. That was my choice.
