I have been a member of the Magic Café for a number of years, and post from time to time.
I also pick up some inspiration here and there, and read some posts with opinions of which I alas have to disagree with. What surprises me, is how many posts some of you actually writes or replies to. I can understand it when newcomers keep searcing for inspiration and help to get on the track. Another thing, and what I really don't understand, is that those of you that claims, - or pretends to be experienced professionals really have the time to post as much as you do! As an example, I guess we all have noticed our friend Greg Arce, who has been with the Café almost since the very beginning. He never stops sharing with his great ideas and thinking and from his experience as a PERFORMER, THINKER and CREATOR. I guess he has contributed with a couple of thousands valuable posts or so during all these years. Others, whith all the "know it all" attitude in the world, with a considerable larger number of posts (I've seen up to 8.000/7-8 each day (!!!) )within a very few years, seem to use their time to disagree or to being arrogant on almost anything they read. What if they took their time to perform for real audiences, rather than hanging out here with their sour grapes? What if, given that they really are as experienced as they claim or pretend, started to CONTRIBUTE ?? What a great place this would be! Just my 2 cents Sven

I agree that the "Know it all" stance seems to be one that is popularly adopted much to the annoyance of many posters, including newbies like myself. I suppose this stems from the stereotype of new users generally being uncommitted leaches who want to find out methods. The problem of this stereotype is that, since the users generalize this characterization to every single new poster they eliminate the possibility of being friendly to an actually honest user.
But I'm also curious as to how most users who are professionals spend their time. |

Yeah. I agree Sven ... but ....
Speaking as a non-professional, and as someone who corresponds with somebody else who freely admits he spends 1% of his time performing, and instead seeks secrets to use them to generate his own ideas so that others can perform his original effects ... Surely, if there can be theoretical physicists, theoretical mathematicians, and theoretical cosmologists, surely there can be theoretical magicians too? Surely. From The Arm Chair Bowler with love. PS This place can surely also be quite addictive. Surely.

Certainly not a pro, I perform regularly though...
This is a good place for reviews, depending on who is saying it, I either buy it or avoid it. And on a personal level, I've become friends with a few people who have helped me immensely with my work. So it's a good way to keep in contact with them too. Don't see the point in pretending on here, as I think the gaps in your knowledge will show. As for the arguments - well, par for the course really, give certain people a place to hide behind, but still vent spleen. that's impossible to resist for a certain type of person. It's a crazy old place I freely admit. I come on here when I need to think about other things, as silly as that sounds. And I think quite a lot. I think no matter how you use this place, it reveals a lot about who you are whether you like it or not. I even wrote an article about forums in general for an online magazine. If something has upset you though, or the place bugs you too much - take a break from it. Switch it off. I occassionally leave forums for a few months at a time and then come back when I'm ready. There's no obligation.

Personally, I spend a lot of my time writing and using the computer for business. I keep several windows open, monitoring news, email, and the favorite forum or two. I'm sorry if corresponding with people here, and commenting on threads that interest me bothers some. But then, that is what the scroll button is for, isn't it?
As for making assumptions on contributions here based on the public postings, it is flawed. More goes on behind the scenes through PMs, emails, and phone conversations than what is posted. Additionally, this place has been wonderful for networking and reconnecting with friends. Now let me get something straight, someone averaging 7 or 8 comments a day (which could take less than 10 minutes in total for the day) cannot not be a professional performer, because he averaged an hour on-line during the week. Is that correct? Let’s assume the average “professional” performer has 6 performances in a given week (the average is more like 4 to my understanding). Let’s make the assumption of 1 hour travel each way for the gig, and an hour for the performance. We have accounted for 18 hours for the week, out of the 126 hours that they are awake. There are 108 hours left… yes, national performers will spend much more time than that traveling, but we are doing a rough average here. So, 108 waking hours, let’s assume that 4 hours a day are spent working on getting work (that is the biggest part of the job), guess where that time is spent? Much of it is on the computer networking, emailing, sending out information packages, and of course, on the phone. So let’s say that 3 ½ hours of each day is on the computer, cannot 10 minutes be spent here networking? What about the spare, 80 hours? As for generalizations, one could draw those on specific people based on what THEY actually post or say when they visit. But that too would be wrong as what is said in public could only be a small part of what THEY actually do here. So, let’s all try to end the year right and start the New Year on a positive note. I always come here looking ideas and inspiration. Because my experiences and knowledge is somewhat limited, there's many times where I do not think I have anything constructive to add. However, I still read and learn.
Like Tony, I am at the computer a lot. Sometimes it is preparing a Sunday School lesson, sometimes it is doing work from home, sometimes catching up with friends and clients vie e-mail. So, the Café is always just one click a way. Pop on for a few minutes, pop off; and the process repeats itself (just like lather, rinse, repeat). Bobby

I have lots of time to spend on forums and post whenever I wish to BECAUSE I work full time as a mentalist. It allows me a lot of freedom and is the most fulfilling work I've ever done (practically the only thing I've EVER done).
I've plenty of time to spend with my family and friends, walk the dogs, read, write, exercise, take a nap, rehearse and practice 4 hours a day, give private readings, perform my shows, network, etc. -J

Time on the forum is time out of the bar when on the road. It is a way to bridge the distance of being away from home and a means to creating a sense of normalcy while in strange places.

I believe the biggest problem here is that there are a lot of children on the Café who create a lot of drama; that and the "I know best crowd". The true professionals seem to lose interest because of the in-fighting in many thread which they do not want to be part of. If a magician is asking an honest question (not method), you can bet someone will criticize him and there will be pages of the thread on that versus answering the question. I don't believe that the number of posts either adds to or takes away from someone's credibility. Knowledge and experience is gained through cutting your chops performing in the real (not virtual) world. I love the Café because there are countless people here that are true professionals in more ways than one. I try my best to steer clear of the ones who seem to sit back and criticize and I mean in a non-constructive manner. Just my two cents.

I have to say, I am reading The Four Day Work Week
by Tim Farris to try to improve my work ethic after reading Tony's comments! I only have do do 3 or 4 gigs month to do well, so that leaves me a massive amount of time for other things. Lots of projects going a the the moment-- 360 degree photography. I did a whole boutique hotel, about 30 pics. http://www.escapesresorts.com.au/locations_t_zero.htm Won't do any more commercially however, too time consuming. Only for fun. Current obsession is Data Mining, Bayes Theorem and Monte Carlo Simulations. I have about 5 different things going on at once, which is easy for me now because I have my mentalism performance on auto pilot. I get booked, get flown with hotels etc without worrying about it. I can change the act if need be, so everything is automatic. I remember reading the Black Swan where Nassim Taleb says if he is asked what he does-- "I live in my library, reading every day. I have a good travel agent and do a few talks..." I am a bit like that too. Ironically, the more you talk and the less you perform mentalism (using it to "prove" your premise, the more you earn. I know a guy that has dropped performing altogether and is making more than he ever did playing corporate games, there is a massive market there. As entrepreneur Bo Peabody says in SMART OR LUCKY-- "Was I lucky? Absolutely. But I was smart enough to realise I was getting lucky!" Cheers. Tom |

My knowledge skills and attitudes towards the art have all greatly increased due to the MC - and because of it I try to incorporate the mystery arts in almost anything I do involving presenting to audiences.

It all depends on one's time management skill. You can have a million things to handle but still get a lot of time if you can manage your time right. In contrast, you could also have 2 things and those would keep you busy whole day.
