When I say that I mean....no card, coins, rubberbands, spongeballs, linking rings, cups and balls, etc. Something really out of the ordinary.

How about 20th century silk to panties! Not impossible, but the spectators all laughed. Hirase

I just learned Doc Eason's All Screwed Up, which is a TIHOIP routine with nuts, bolts, and a really cool kicker! When you bring out hardware, people know they are in for something special.

I think it is "Two in the hand, one in the pocket."
Of course, "Two in the hand, one in the pocket" can be done with almost any small objects. I think that there are lots of opportunities out there, just use your imagination. For example, I once saw a magician perform chink-a-chink using small packages of a Lifesavers-like candy. I believe he used small vending machine rolls (about 5 or 6 candies in each), but these are also probably available around Halloween for trick-or-treats. Joe Givan does a Matrix effect with buttons that end up sewn onto a napkin you are using as a close-up mat (I use packets of sewing needles to cover them, rather than playing cards – part of my magic from the sewing box routine), and also starts a trick with a small ball and jacks, which turns into a card trick with (what else?) four jacks – a nice departure from the normal four ace tricks. I believe that Silent Mora had a number of tricks using marbles. What is it you are looking for specifically? Impromptu stuff? Close-up? Prepared/gaffed material? 0pus |

I really like performing "Deadlock" by David Acer. You link a spectators ring on a lock. Then, under cover you mysteriously have switched his ring for YOUR ring. A real Gem!

Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I love to ask if a person can see anything in my eye. I then hit the back of my head and my eye pops out. I clean off the hair, dust etc.. then pop it back in and ask Is it straight? This is fun to do with a fake eye. Fingerpalm, Shuttle pass.

A while back I was playing with the idea of using sugar cubes for a matrix/shadow coins type effect. I think I remember seeing it from one of the Jon Tremaine videos.
If dice are "out of the ordinary," I'm learning Sack's Dice Routine from Fooler Doolers Volume 3.

Gaetan Bloom has some really clever ideas using a slinky. Both vanishes and productions, and also an awesome newspaper test.

I forgot to say that there is a cool one in Art of Astonishment Volume 1 called "Leaf." You tear off a leaf from a tree and have a spectator initial it then you restore it back onto the tree in a healthy growing condition. It takes a bit of set-up and is not good for all venue, but when the time is right it would be a killer effect.

The two silly putty routines from the AoA volume 2 books. I've never tried them because I never think of buying Silly Putty. But they seem really cool.
Although I am worried that the Silly Putty padal would break in mid routine. But what do I know, I haven't tried it yet!. |

I work at Taco Bell. So I do effects like "two in the hand, one in the pocket" with packets of mild sauce. Or reciepts start to float around the mexi nuggets that are dancing on the counter. Its awesome.
Haha, I just remembered this. When I would go camping in the summer, I would collect some of the flat skipper rocks and do spellbound effects with them. I could actually get good distance muscle passing them too. |

JGriff,
Hope this is not a put down, but you must be pretty new to magic--unless you mean something other than merely doing matrix or shadow coins with sugar cubes. That was the original Malini routine, I think, from the early 1930's; if not this, it certainly was identified with Sam Horowitz (S.Leo Bey) who did a wonderful job of presenting it to the magic community of the 50's in the STARS OF MAGIC. Yes, but you MUST be wearing a fez to do it. Otherwise, it won't work.

Good one marko. I wonder if wearing strange clothing will aid me in my magic. Maybe I could get one of those 20th Century Bra Tricks and wear it as a cape. I wonder if that would help my magic. Andrew |

Andrew, I do a routine with a paper bag. The kids love this at parties, throwing an invisible ball into the air and catching it in the bag. It's a great audio effect.

Martyk,
I in now way meant that I came up with the Matrix effect using sugar cubes. I understand that original routines used sugar cubes instead of coins. I responded with using sugar cubes because Andrew asked for effects that don't use cards, coins, rubber bands, etc. Now that I think about it, I guess sugar cubes really aren't "out of the ordinary".
