A local magician told me there are 16, though from my reading I can only find four:
1. Misdirection 2. Suggestion 3. Imitation 4. Concealment  Do you know what he might have meant by 16 principles? What are the rest? |

He may have been speaking of classifications of effects. Various theorists have produced lists that categorize effects. My preferred list comes from "Magic in Theory: An introduction to the theoretical and psychological elements of conjuring" by Peter Lamont and Richard Wiseman. Their list consists of:
1) Appearance 2) Vanish 3) Transposition 4) Transformation 5) Penetration 6) Restoration 7) Extraordinary feats a. Mental feats b. Physical feats 8) Telekinesis 9) Extrasensory perception (ESP) a. Clairvoyance b. Telepathy c. Precognition d. Mental control Each of these categories has a number of known methods. For example, in the Appearance category you have at least three possible methods: a. Object was already there but was concealed; b. Object was secretly put in position; c. Object is not actually there but appears to be. Depending on the source you might well come up with sixteen categories plus a great many more methods. The principles you mentioned are certainly valid and are applied as part of all the methods. They are essentially meta-principles to the methods I mentioned. There are many other lists for example I understand there is a Peter Warlock list that encompasses a dozen categories. I seem to remember there is a list in Maskelyne and Devant's "Our Magic" an early classic of magic theory. I am not sure if this is the type of "Principle" your friend was referring to but keep reading.

Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel are all you need to study to learn to play guitar.

Although I do not own any of his publications I believe Dariel Fitzkee came up with a list of all possible types of effects and all possible methods.

I'd say the most important one by a long mile is: PRESENTATION
Without it, you can't call yourself a magician, mentalist, clown, juggler, whatever. You can take the simplest "trick" or method and make a memorable routine out of it; you can take a deeply clever method and destroy it with a weak and uninteresting presentation.
