I don't know who Miggy is, but I started losing interest after his third unmotivated move to his lap. The moves were definitely there, but the magic was lost on me.

I am confused, there are two people? There only appears to be one person handling those cups. Sorry, I am hearing impaired and cannot comment on the patter.
It was refreshing to see a 2-cup routine and I saw a lot of good stuff going on there. Just did not like the final load section, I thought that was way too much. There was one time you spun the Wand, and to me that was more of a distraction than part of the routine. If you are going to do Wand spinning make sure you do it well before you include it in the C&B routine. Although, I felt you used the Wand well with other parts of this routine. The whole routine was a bit too long, but there were a lot of moves that I liked. Glad you did a 2-cup routine, I think you did great with that. I do think you are heading in the right direction and will one day be an excellent magician. If you get one-on-one mentoring, I guarantee you will excel to a higher level with no problems. Keep up the good work! |

Sal is Miggy's father! Keep in mind that Miggy is just turning 13 and has only been studying a short while! Although he doesn't get to attend all of the Tavern nights in Manila, he is at least a part time student of Rannie's so yeah, I'd say that between his father, Rannie and his hard work and dedication young Miggy could become a MAJOR player in the magic kingdom! |

Chubster,
Dave is correct about the unmotivated trips to the lap. While it certainly did not make me loose my interest one bit...I would suggest that Miggy pays attention to the little details that make things magical along the way and not just the final results that he has in mind. Nothing wrong at this early stage but it is something to think about. He should be encouraged to be as creative and daring as he wants to be since he is not a performing pro. I would also like to comment about the simultaneous vanishes that he does. Miggy puts a ball in his left hand....before making it disappear, he would take another ball and put it in the same hand then the spotlight is just on the last ball being vanished. There was a lapse in clarity. The loads were too deep and they took too long out of site (the cups). One last thing... I feel Miggy should do less proving that the cups are empty. Having said all that....I appreciate the fact that Miggy is beginning to use patter. Good Luck! Oh Dave...who is Miggy? Miggy is the son of one of my oldest friends in Philippine Magic...The Chubster! Gentlemen...remember this boys name...I can almost hear this boy's name echo around the world in a couple of years. Too many phases for my taste, I would cut the routine down, however not bad at all for a young boy.

WOW! He's already better than I was at that age...Great job kid!
What's important here I think is that he definitely has the basics down very well and it will only get better and better with practice. He clearly has an idea about routining, making simultaneous things happen, audience interation and misdirection...All of that and he's not yet 13yrs. old. Imagine Miggy at 16, at 18, or 20 with this stuff. He is on his way to becoming quite amazing when you understand how much like sponges kids are and clearly he is around a pool of good magic and teachers like his dad the Chubster, The Boss - Rannie and others there in Manilla. Most of all, he is very interested and it shows. So as to this performance I think it's pretty darn good but it's all the performances to come where you will all clearly see the importance of this seedling and the fertilizer that makes him grow. Good job Miggy, just keep doing what you're doing because you're doing it right kid. I'm always cheering for you. -Mb, La Famiglia(USA)

Another technique comment:
Is he using a Chop Cup? If not, why does he slam the cups as if he does? He can place the cup with a load as gently as if he's not loading and it wouldn't telegraph that "something" is happening. I agree too with the final load delay. The cups don't have to go out of sight, just to the edge. Rannie has a motivation for going to his lap. His general posture throughout is with a hand in his lap and his elbow on the table as if he's thinking. Miggy doesn't have that, so all the lap work is pretty obvious. Keep it up Miggy! You're off to a great start. You just need a few touch ups here and there.

One more thing I would like to add.
Before any magician walks up onto the stage, they first make sure that they are presentable as magicians. You were wearing a Tank-top like you had just came from the beach, and this video that you created will be seen around the world as a little boy in a Tank-top. While you are learning magic, remember to learn how to sell it. Learn the business side of selling your act. I learned to create good photos, but I never learned to sell it, therefore my photography never went anywhere. When I do magic among a select group of people, I get dressed up in nice casual clothing that matches my personality and my magic. Also, I make sure I have a nice haircut and brush my teeth/rinse with mouthwash. How you present yourself is one thing, the other is how you are presented. The video looks like it was done in some room of your house and it was too dark. It sort of looked like Godfather hidden in the dark. Learn the tricks of Videophotography and lighting. TURN ON THE LIGHTS! Your video was too dark. Maybe in 20 years people are not going to believe it was you in that dark video. Make your videos good enough to be seen later in life. Have fun Miggy! |

This is an interesting start on a routine. There are a few times where the pace seems to come to a screeching halt. However, if this were being performed live, there might be applause at these places.
The table layout was good during all of it. During the last load, there was a bit too much time spent "underground," so to speak. That cup should not appear to go out of sight. There needs to be a way to clean that up. Dress is more casual in the Phillipines, so I'm willing to accept the tank top. However, I, too, would like to see the work under a bit more light. All in all, it's an excellent set of ideas. Keep working on it.

Keep working on your routine Miggy and you will continue to improve! And next time you perform in front of the camera just slip on a barong tagalog over the tank top and you will be looking sharp.

Hi All,
I would like to thank everyone for their posts and made sure Miggy took note of all your comments. Like what said, the kid is only 12 years old with a lot more room for improvements. I have some more videos to post soon so please watch out for them. As a Dad, it makes me feel proud everytime he will ask me to videotape his performance. I know there are bits of flashes here and there, that why I am sharing it to this community so you guys can give him groper advice. I would also like to thank Rannie for giving him pointers and giving him the proper directions everytime they meet. Too bad I just couldn't find time from my busy Holidays sked to accompany Miggy so they can have a Jam Session. Next time I film him, I will ask him to put on a shirt. Again, thanks for all your advices! Chubster / Sal |

Miggy is doing fine. The Café is not necessarily the most sympathetic audience, but I think most of us try to be honest and helpful.

Thank you for posting Bill. This means a lot to me, Sal and Miggy! Miggy knows who you guys are and I am sure he will get a kick and be very inspired to work harder and really think about his routining. Truth, honesty...these are key things in magic and life. That is ... if there is genuine concern.
Sal, Tell Miggy to pay me a visit one free day. In the meantime, its back to school and school will be the priority. Oh...see you and Miggy tom at the studio. Rannie

I think that Miggy is off to a very good start with his routine.
I would suggest that he gives some thought to pacing his routine. As Bill said, there are some flat spots. These tend to be slightly distracting and can lower interest. I am sure that if he gives thought to some of the hints, tips and comments given here his routine may well become a highlight of his repertoire.

Hi!
The technique is very good for a twelve year old! The final load is not the best, but I'd say it's ok. You have a lot of time to work on that The whole routine is a bit too long I think. Balls vanish too often to appear under a cup again. It's always the same. I think it's better to do a short routine where the spectator sticks to it instead of vanishing tha ball again and again. Anyway, you can work on that too But, do you really have *fun* doing this routine? It seems to me like you are presenting a boring homework at school. Don't just do the routine step by step. Put some magic in it. Have fun! Imagine you would see what your spectators see. "Hey the ball is back under the cup!" Wow! Isn't that amazing? If you are amazed, your spectators will be amazed too! As I said, I think your technique is really very good for 12 years! You should now put some more energy in the presentation. Have fun!! ...Nicole
