I have been doing a mentalism act with Rocky Raccoon (I call him Mr Wiggers in my act) and it is going down a storm. I thought I would share it with you because it really gets the kids going and if anyone has any ideas to add, please do so...
"Now I bet that you don’t know this, but Mr. Wigglers is a mind reader. Do you know what a mind reader can do? He can tell what you are thinking without you telling him. Mr. Wigglers would like to show you his amazing mind reading abilities. First I shall place this cloth over his head so that he can’t see anything. Can you see anything at all Mr. Wigglers? You can’t, that’s good. Now boys and girls, I need you to be very quiet and not give any clues at all to Mr. Wigglers. I am going to hold up a mystery object and Mr. Wigglers will read our minds and tell us what it is. Won’t you Mr. Wigglers? Mr. Wigglers, can you tell me what I have in my hand? You are not getting a good impression you say? The boys and girls aren’t thinking hard enough about the object. Boys and girls, can you clear your minds and think only about the object that I am holding? Mr. Wigglers tells me that one of the girls is thinking about how cute he is and that she really wants to kiss him. Who is thinking that? (While I am saying this Mr. Wigglers takes a peek – I of course don’t notice and ignore the shouts – he quickly returns back under the cloth). Now Mr. Wigglers, can you tell me what I am holding in my hand? That’s right, it is a marker pen. Good job Mr. Wigglers, you are amazing. Boys and girls, I have no idea how he does that, do you? He what? He peeked? Mr. Wigglers, did you peek? (Shakes his head). I am glad to hear it, you know that cheaters never prosper. Let’s try it again, but this time I am going to be watching you very carefully. Mr. Wigglers, what am I holding in my hand? An elephant? Don’t be silly. A motorbike! Mr. Wigglers, please concentrate. Remember children to think hard about the object (while I am talking to the audience he peeks again–ignore shouts). Do you know what it is yet? A watch! Yes you are right. You know what I am thinking now do you? What is it then, what am I thinking? I am thinking that I should let you eat the flowers. I don’t think so Mr. Wigglers. Boys and girls, a big clap for Mr. Wigglers, the amazing mind reading raccoon." That's it - anything anyone can suggest to improve what seems to be a good basic routine would be very welcome.

In a flash of inspiration, I have added another idea to this. At the end the raccoon peeks, I catch him, but he does not know this. I swap the article I am holding and
HE STILL GUESSES RIGHT. Amazing huh?

That'll work, I like the way he peeks and you don't catch him. The kids will be sure to let you know he is peeking.
Here's another thing you can do. Run a string from Rockys mouth through his inside to the rear of Rocky and tie it off on his rear end around the spring. Cut the string near his mouth and knot it close to his mouth. On the mouth end, place some Magician's Wax on that string knot. When you squeeze Rocky the string comes out of his mouth about six inches. If you have Rocky near the Cards and place the selected card on the wax and let go of Rocky it will appear he jumped out of your hand under the cloth cover, attacked the cards and selected the choosen card which is now stuck to his face. Great effect if played up and the deck if cards is in a volunteers hand. (Attack of the Raccoon is upon us!) A variation to this is to run a longer string right through Rocky giving you a longer length to work with (Don't tie off the rear end, make a loop for your finger to hold on to). This way, when Rocky jumps you can pull the string with your hand that released Rocky. When you pick up Rocky the card will still be at his mouth. This way you have a greater distance then the six inches on the previous example. I have a Spring Skunk, and I might just do it with that, however, I don't think I want to do this and Pro Viper II in the same show. (Similar Tricks) It also works with spring snakes in the peanut butter can. The first snake grabs the card and the others act as misdirection. When you pick up the snakes, one of them has the card on it's face! Hope you can use these comical routines.

I love It!!!!
I have been working on ventriloquism and wanted to incorporate mentalism for kids. Your routine is great. Let us know of any improvemments and I am sure you will be hearing from me. Anything to make a child laugh is the best magic in the world. SloMo

I like your ideas for Rocky. I too have an elaborate routine for Rocky, it was published in Duane Laflin's Happy Magic Newsletter (July 2000). I enjoy performing with Rocky and kid's reactions are great.

magicmondo,
How do you get around the problem that the kids cannot hear the raccoon talking, but you can? I found that letting him whisper to your ear maybe a solution but only second best. Cheers Christian |

I like the whisper in the ear thing, it is quite comical and seems to work well. As it is a mentalism act, I suppose he could communicate through telepathy.

Clever idea! I did not think about this possibility until now.
How about other ideas doing tricks with rocky? How about the raccoon predicting something? Or doing cool stunts (catching something in mid air)? I also tried a floating raccoon bit, but could not tie it in with my current routine. |

Sounds like a great routine, but obviously it's more a comedy thing without any actual magic. I'm not suggesting this is a bad thing by any stretch though, but maybe you could have him guess the object that even _you_ don't know. The kids will obviously realise that if you can see it so can Mr Wiggers, so maybe you could close it off with a mentalism stunt?

Adam - that's the finale I have been looking for - great idea. I agree there is no actual magic, but it is a magic theme and the kids seem to go along with it. I neglected to mention that immediately before the Rocky routine, I make a full size elephant appear in a matchbox, and right after Rocky I make the Earth spin on its axis in the opposite direction. So there is some magic thrown in there somewhere. Please note, some of the above is made up.

A lot of raccoons like to think they are as good as Rocky. They even trick their keepers into calling them by the name Rocky. The kids don't know the difference! The kids just like what Rocky does...
The presentation makes the magic.

Dang. I'm still doing most of the demo material. I need to give Rocky more creative input into our show.
In case anyone wants to do the "impressions" but realizes that kids don't know Tom Selleck, Brooke Shields, etc., here are the ones I use: eyebrows: Bert from Sesamie Street, moustache: Super Mario, armpit: Kim Kardashian. Lincoln still works for the beard. |

MagicCol the thing is that Rocky ....excuse me Robbie by magic makers is really bad....spring is too hard, too stiff...my fingers hurt after 5 minutes of playing with it...
When I use Rocky....I could play with it for hours .....and it feels much better.... other thing is that tail is too short...... |

I like this routine a lot. I have a Rocky routine in which (after producing him from a dove pan) he finds a selected card. He nods his head that he's found the card, but when I ask him to pick it up, he shakes his head no. This goes of a few times with my stage whisper instructing him to pick up the card growing steadily louder and more frustrated. Finally, I ask the volunteer child (usually the birthday kid) to ask Rocky to pick up the card and he immediate does so (with the help of magician's wax on the nose.)
I'll probably stick with my routine, but I might adapt yours as an alternative if I know I'm going to be performing for the same family of a lot of the same kids at another show. Thanks for sharing. |

Use to do a mind reading chicken routine and end with the old double color changing silk. He would whisper in my ear that it red and blue (it was really green and yellow). I would be happy with his failure, he would insist he was right. We would argue and he would reach over and grab the silk changing it to red and blue. Rocky could do the same with the help of an extra finger. I miss old Harlan, buy he was tasty.
