I've been looking for quartz crystal cylinders for a special order. Any idea where I can find them?

The late Mike Longworth (who was a well-known historian with respect to vintage guitars and banjos) was the nephew of the late David Price who was the owner of the Egyptian Hall Museum. I was a friend of Mike's and he offered to take me by his uncle's house to see the collection. So, while I was at a bluegrass convention in Nashville, I met up with Mike and he took me over there. One of the wands in the collection belonged to Robert-Houdin. I remember the Willard wand as well. David's son came over while I was there and started showing me all the posters in the collection. They were nice, but I had no interest in paper. I was more interested in the props. I translated a few of the posters for him, though. He seemed to be a rather rough customer when it came to the magic props, etc. I felt then that the less I dealt with him, the better. But David Price, himself, was one heck of a nice guy.

Yes, David Price was extremely generous with his time and the museum which was located in his home in Brentwood. I was always amazed at how open he was. The Willard wand with the bullet tips was, of course, the inspiration for the Tabman Bullet Wand as well as Pete Biro's suggestion to call it a Ghetto Wand. I later started doing tips with not only .38 shell casings, but .45s and 20 gauge shotgun shells too. I'd head out the back door of the shop and blast a few rounds and then use the brass.
Now that's a small world. I never knew Longworth was Mr. Price's nephew. He once sent me a super nice leather guitar strap when he was at Martin Guitars. I had written him a letter with a suggestion and he thanked me with the strap. I wish I still had it but I made the mistake of loaning it to a young relative he viewed it as simply a piece of leather, easily replacable.

Coincidentally, your name came up today as I was writing and somehow you found your way into my new book, Tabman Nagic. We've known each other a long time.

That, we have. Are you going to relate the story about the paddle?

I definitely want one.
BTW, it was your version of the jumping peg paddle that let me on the quest for the origins of the paddle trick. Consequently, that led me on the quest for the origins of the cups and balls. See what you started!

I didn't know that but I appreciate your telling me. That makes me a happy magician and seeker of the truth.
Hmmm. That sounds like a good quote for the book too. I hadn't considered doing that. See what you started! Thanks. -=tabman

Wow! How very interesting. I am so glad that Tabman's peg paddle generated the spark that has grown into a veritable bonfire of Cups & Balls knowledge, history, and documentation. My utmost appreciation to both of you.

Ive always appreciated his dedication and bulldogged determination to complete what he starts. What got me started with the JP paddle was finding one in my Uncle's personal effects after he passed away. It's a crude, home-made paddle and had half a broken toothpick for the peg. I was surprised at how well the paddle move went with this paddle and I started scheming on how to make it out of rosewood. Also in with his stuff was a magicians wand from an early magic set with the tips all rusty. I later found the box cover and a couple of the pieces of the kit. I forget which one but it was an AC Gilbert Mysto. Uncle Ben lived in Mexico and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he was a magician. Of course, his mother, my grandmother is the one who sparked the interest in magic for me. -=tabman
