Title: Quintet 5 by Jack Kent Tillar
Medium: Book, paper back Arena: Mentalism Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Jack Kent Tillar is a very successful composer who worked in the film/TV industry and also a talented mentalist for over four decades. He is the creator of the great blister effect that many do, often with Tim Trono’s great utility, and is a well respected member of the mentalist community. Jack has been releasing his material in a series of books and with Quintet he covers the field of ‘predictions’. Predictions would be predicting numbers, headlines, things of that nature, and these often play very well. In Quintet you get over two dozen performance pieces from Jack and others, for example the great Maurice Fogel and Ross Johnson. The book is in paperback, 144 pages, and lacks illustrations yet I think that a couple simple illustrations would have been good to have in the chapters where certain types of envelope instructions are explained. The book itself is very well written and the explanations are clear and to the point. At the beginning of chapters of previously released material you get to read the ad copy which read just like the magic ads we have come to know and love. I like that because I compare the old ads to the actual piece and it is fun to see how they match up. The effects range from those you likely will never have the opportunity to perform but the information and thinking behind them is interesting to those you’ll want to perform at the earliest opportunity. My favorite is called ‘Go Figure’, a brilliantly simple routine where the audience predicts the total of a set of numbers you previously wrote and that you show the audience. I had the opportunity to perform this at a Chamber of Commerce show last week and it went over great. ‘ESP Symbol Control’ is another wonderful routine that will require, until Jack releases the proper, a bit of craftsmanship on your part but well worth it. In this routine the spectator picks five ESP cards at random and puts them in the stand and the order matches your prediction. There are other very good routines in the book other than these and a couple, as I said, you’ll never do. Jack also goes over a couple different types of envelopes and his nail writer, great stuff. I love Jacks material and have most of his books and always find something worthwhile in them. The prediction routines are great fun and if you send out your prediction in advance you get to incorporate your host in a positive way in the show and show your mental prowess. The utilities he explains, as in the envelopes, have other applications beyond Jacks routines and are good to know how to make. I’m glad Jack is writing these books and sharing his material with us. I recommend Quintet and anything else with Jack Kent Tiller on the title page. |
