Whatever you do, don't use anything that anyone else has ever used, because there are some on this board who regard that as taboo.
My advice, however is this - without thinking about other magicians you have seen, consider the image you want to portray. What sort of music would best portray your character? How do you want to present the Sub Trunk - lightning-fast, or somewhat slower? You probably don't want heavy metal if you are presenting it as a balletic piece rather than as a slam-bang number. Next, think about the sort of audience you will be playing to and the genre of music they listen to and/or enjoy. If you have the flexibility, seek out music that is appropriate to the group. For example, if you are playing to a group of seventy-year-olds and older, you might want to look at swing music such as "Sing, Sing, Sing". In a lot of ways, this sort of music is timeless, and is still enjoyed by today's generation, as long as it fits your character. Classical, jazz, and rock music all run the gamut from flowing to gutbusting. Maybe most importantly - select something that you like. Listen to everything you can get your hands on on radio stations, iTunes, television, movies, etc. And that's my $.02 and I'm sure it is worth every penny...

Just listen to the radio, watch movies and listen for the soundtrack, listen to CDs your friends have, listen to things you wouldn't normally pay attention to... you'll find something.

Loyal, not to rain on your parade... but what you're asking is similar to:
"I do the Ambitious Card effect. What shirt should I wear?" The only way you can truly pick out a song is to pick out something that connects with you as a character and the way you're performing the piece. We can't tell you what song to use because we know nothing about you. There's your answer. And its the only one anyone here can give you until you give us more to work with. But overall, the idea of "Listen to everything you can" is a good start. |

I've never performed the sub trunk, but I would think that an instrumental that starts slow and builds as it goes would be good. I've also always thought that the song," Changes " by Yes would be good.

I agree. The music you use is as unique as you are. It should fit your personality and style of performance. If the illusion is done as a comedy bit, then the music needs to flow and accompany that aspect. If the style is more modern and flashy, then perhaps something techno might fit better. It really comes down to your style and what you intend to do with the illusions presentation.
Many times I will listen to music and just get a feel for something. Often times magicians create illusions and acts and THEN try and find music that fits it. I find this often much harder and does not always work. The best way for me to work is to find music I really love that conveys s certain feeling or repsonse. Then I work with that song and comprise the illusion or act based around that. In this way the music becomes a very intrical part of what it is you are doing. Kyle

Get a copy of Garageband and make up something yourself. It's easy, royalty-free, and you can change it up yourself to hit your markers spot-on.

If you have Garageband'08, this tutorial DVD is pretty good: https://askvideo.com/product_info.php?cP......bc90b0b6
If you have Garageband version 3, then this book/DVD-ROM is a good resource: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Training-Gar......4&sr=8-5 Once you learn to work with the application, you can make some great music for free pretty easily. If you play an instrument, you can customize it even more.

Wow LoyalR, you posted right after ClintonMangus gave you the most valuable advice you could have possibly received on the topic....and you showed absolute total disregard to what he had to say. I, and I'm sure many others, would advise you to reread that and take it into consideration. Good sound advice.
